Icalled your office and Anna said you were in a meeting. I don’t want to do anything with them without your knowledge, but I know you won’t get back to me before it’s time for me to be there so I’m going to go. I am apologizing in advance if I’m out of line but I can’t leave them there alone.– Cam

Ipicked up these travel mugs for them. I got them filled with hot chocolate. We winning. – Cam

Two more texts were videos and pictures.

“I didn’t turn my phone back on, and I didn’t see Anna before I left the office,” I admitted.

“You are upset with me being here?” Cam asked.

“Yes, but no. I mean, I was upset, but I thought…”

“You thought what?” Cam asked, placing her free hand on her hip and tilting her head to the side.

When she made those moves, I knew I had put my foot in my mouth.

“You thought that I would disrespect you by doing something with your children without your permission? Do you not know me at all! I came here because Skye called me and I didn’t want to let her down! I tried to call you and text you…”

“No, look,” I interrupted her, took the things out of her hands, and placed them on the hood of her car. I held both of her hands in mine. “I jumped to a stupid conclusion, and I am sorry. Charge it to the fact that I’m not used to someone showing up for the girls and me. That’s all. I’m sorry. Please forgive me for lumping you in with other people.”

“Naw, you came at me like I was a groupie or something. Like I would use the girls to get your attention or something stupid like that. You should know I wouldn’t do you like that!” Cam returned.

“I do know. I’m sorry.”

“Naw, buddy. A simple sorry won’t work. You’re going to have to make up for this one,” Cam said.

“You’re right. How can I make this up to you?”

“I’m not sure. You better come correct though cause my feelings are hurt,” Cam smirked.

“How about I cook dinner for you tonight?”

“I’m going to be working late since I moved my appointments around to be here.”

“You’re not going to make this easy, are you?”

“Nope, you won’t remember the lesson if it’s easy,” Cam responded.

“Alright, I will make you dinner tonight and I will make sure it’s warm and ready to eat no matter what time you get home,” I said.

“So, it’s going to be ready to eat when I get home? No microwaves? No oven?”

“Nope. It will be fresh and ready. Just call me when you are leaving the shop.”

“Ummm,” she said as she contemplated my offer.

“I will throw in a bottle ofMcIntyre’srosé,” I added.

“Deal!” she smiled.

“Hey, thank you for showing up for the girls. I appreciate it, and I know they do too.”

“They both said thank you more than once. It was my pleasure. I remember what it felt like to be the only kid whose parents didn’t show up for an event. I don’t want them to ever feel alone like I did,” Cam said.

“I’m familiar with the feeling, too, which is why I tried to make it,” I explained. “I would’ve missed it, though. Thank you for being here.”

“It was my pleasure. I got full off free muffins, so I won’t need breakfast or lunch,” she chuckled.
