“With ranch dressing?” Skye asked.

“Yes, you can get ranch.”

Iheld the phone to my ear with my shoulder while my sister went on and on about everyone that had RSVP’d for the family picnic.

“You remember Darlene and Fredrick?” Sarah asked.

“Our cousins from Florida?”

“Yep, they are coming. You know our family from Mississippi is coming, Samona, Teresa, and Marshall. They are driving up,” Sarah said.

“Sounds like a lot of people will be there,” I said.

“Yep. The only person that’s missing is you.”

“Rah…”

“I just need a hard yes or no from you. This is not just about mommy, it’s about family. It’s about overcoming which we all have. Let’s just put all the bitterness aside for one day…well two days and celebrate with each other. Let’s be a family for once!”

“If I say yes, will you keep talking about this with me?”

“Probably not.”

“Fine. The girls and I will be there, but I’m bringing a friend.”

“Yes! Baby brother! What size t-shirt does your friend need?”

“I don’t know. A woman’s size.”

“Is she shaped like me, a little fluffy, or is she shaped like Vera, a bean pole?”

“I would say she’s in between?”

“Okay, I will order her a women’s large. She can tie it up if it’s too big. Thank you, Moe. You won’t regret this!”

“Yeah. We will see.”

“I love you for at least trying,” Sarah said.

“I love you too, which is why I agreed to this madness.”

I switched the phone to my other shoulder to continue cooking dinner.

“What is all that noise in the background?” Sarah asked.

“I’m cooking dinner.”

“For you and the girls?”

“For us and for my friend,” I answered.

“The same friend you’re bringing to the family reunion?”

“Yes…”

“I’ve never met any of your friends, baby brother. She’s special?”
