“Of course you can,” Valentina responded. “Cam and I will help you into them.”

“Let me show you to their room,” Cam said.

Valentina rolled the rack down the hall behind Cam and the girls. I waited in the living room while they tried on the dresses.

After turning on my phone, it vibrated for what felt like a minute straight. I’d missed text messages from several people. My phone had died during my sickness, and I hadn’t bothered to charge it.

Nigglet! What are you doing for our birthday? Let’s go out. – Drew

Darron is down with a fellas night out – Drew

Andrew, Darron, and I attended undergrad together. Andrew and I shared the same birthday. We’d celebrated our birthdays together since we met. We’d had some epic birthday parties in undergrad.

I replied to him:

The girls are going to a sleepover the weekend of our birthday. I’m down for a celebration.

If the girls won’t be home, we should bring the party to you. – Drew

Naw, nigrah. You’re not having a party at my house. I remember your parties. We can go out.

Alright. I will plan it and let you know. - Drew

I navigated to the text messages I’d received from Bee. I hadn’t heard from her in weeks. She must’ve really been enjoying her time in Atlanta, childless and carefree.

I’m calling you. Why aren’t you answering the phone? – Bee

It would be great if you would answer your phone so I can speak to the girls. – Bee

Morris! This is ridiculous. You can’t stop me from speaking to my babies. – Bee

I dialed Beatrice’s number.

“So, you finally decided to respond to my calls?” Bee said after answering the call.

“What possible reason would I have for ignoring your calls, Beatrice? Oh, I know, you stood the girls up for the thing at their school that you promised them you would be here for?” I asked.

“I was having car problems! Damn, Morris! I’m trying to do something, so I can have something better for them.” Bee snapped back.

“Do you know how sad it is for a kid to be the only one at an event like that without their mother? Then Skye had to call you, you didn’t even have the decency to call and let them know that you weren’t coming. I could have kept them home from school or made plans to be there with them myself.”

“I’m sorry! What do you want me to do? I couldn’t make it. I couldn’t walk or fly. The car was my only means of transportation and Tony was busy with it.”

“I thought you said it wasn’t working?”

“I didn’t say it wasn’t working. I said I was having car problems.”

“Whatever, Bee. What do you want?”

“I just want to say hello to my babies and apologize for missing the thing,” she whined.

“The thing that was several weeks ago?”

“You wasn’t answering the phone!” she yelled.

“Right…I didn’t answer my phone for two weeks. That’s your story? That’s what you will tell the girls when they ask why you haven’t called?”

“Morris, I just want to say hello to my daughters. I miss them.”
