“How did you know where he’d taken me?”

“The CCTV and I found the beads you dropped.”

“You did? I didn’t know if you would, but I didn’t know what else to do.”

“It was a great idea.”

“I got him to talk. I thought if I could keep him talking, I could buy myself some time.” I kiss her head, knowing how terrified she must have been. “He tracked my phone, Sawyer. That’s how Matt knew we were at the cabin.”

“What?” I ask, frowning. “When?”

“He said he came to ask for Tylenol for Kitty. He wanted to bug the apartment, but when he saw my phone, he changed his mind.”

“Fuck! I remember him asking for Tylenol.” Anger bubbles in my stomach, and I want to punch something. He was right under my nose, and I didn’t have a clue. “I’m sorry, baby. Your phone was on the table in the entryway. He must have done something to it.”

“Why are you apologizing? It isn’t your fault, Sawyer. None of us knew Nick wasn’t who he said he was…” she trails off. “You don’t have to beat yourself up anymore. You didn’t miss Matt following us. He was tracking my phone. When it died after we left Hilton Head Island, he must have lost us. I stupidly turned it on to call my mom when we got to the cabin. It was my fault he found me.”

“None of this is your fault, Hallie. We were all fooled.”

“He’d been watching me for weeks, long before Amanda died. I had no idea.”

“That fucking bastard! They had everything planned.”

She takes my hand and squeezes. “Everything except you. They couldn’t plan for you.”

I shake my head. “You got shot, Hallie.”

“Sawyer, stop it,” she says sternly. “I’m okay!”

“There were a few minutes in the woods when I thought I’d lost you. I don’t know what I would have done if—” I choke on my words, unable to say them out loud.

“You saved me, Sawyer.” She brushes her lips gently across mine. “The doctor told me if you hadn’t put the tourniquet on my leg, I’d have bled out.”

“I love you so much, Hallie.”

“I love you too.” She yawns. After what she’s been through, she must be exhausted.

“You should get some sleep, sweetheart.”

“Will you stay?” she asks.

“Try and make me leave.” She smiles and moves over slightly in the bed, wincing as she moves her leg.

“Are you okay?” I ask, hating to see her hurting.

She nods. “Lie with me.” She pats the space next to her, and I kick off my shoes before climbing on the bed. She drops her head on my chest, and I wrap my arm around her.

“Sleep, baby. I’ll be here waiting when you wake.”

And I will.

I’ll wait forever for her.

ChapterForty-One

Hallie

Opening my eyes, I move my leg, wincing as I forget in my haze of sleep there had been a bullet in it not too long ago. Looking up, Sawyer smiles at me.
