“You’re not fighting now?” I whisper.

“The need to kiss you.” He plants a soft kiss on my cheek. “To touch you.” His lips move down my neck, his teeth nibbling on my skin. “To hold you.” His mouth finds mine, and I moan against his lips. “All that won out. Now that I’ve done all those things, I know they willalwayswin out.”

My heart flips at his words, and a smile crosses my lips. “Wow,” I mutter as I stare at him.

“What?” he asks with a smile. I shake my head, too embarrassed to say. “Tell me.”

“It’s like… like something out of one of my books.” I smile, and his thumb strokes my cheek.

“And that’s good?”

“Very good,” I tell him as I go on my tiptoes and brush my lips against his.

“Let’s get you in the hot tub, baby. We’ll continue this later.” He winks at me, and butterflies explode in my stomach. I kiss him once more before he drops his arms from around me.

“Are you coming in?” I ask as I dash into the bathroom and grab a towel.

“Not this time. I’m going to catch up with my dad if that’s okay with you?”

I walk out of the bathroom with the towel in my hand. “Of course, it’s okay.”

“I’m definitely going in the hot tub with you before we leave,” he growls, his eyes heated as they track over my body. He pulls me to him again, and I drop the towel on the floor. “I can’t stop kissing you now that I’ve started,” he mumbles, his lips brushing against mine.

My hands rest on his chest, and I can feel his heart pounding under my fingers. I never believed someone like Sawyer would be interested in me. I’m damaged goods with enough baggage to drown anyone in close proximity. But feeling his heart racing under my fingertips…can he really be as affected by me as I am by him?I’m beginning to think he might be.

“Stay in my room tonight?” he whispers, his lips almost touching mine. My eyes go wide, and I still in his arms. He must feel my awkwardness, and he steps back.

“Hey, look at me.” I raise my eyes to his, and I’m sure I look terrified. As much as I like him, and Ireallylike him, I’m not ready to sleep with him.

“I’m not asking you to do anything you’re not ready to do. I simply want to hold you, okay?”

Relief washes over me. “I’d like that.” I smile at him, nervous butterflies fluttering in my stomach.

He smiles back and kisses me. “I need to stop kissing you, or we’ll never get out of this room.” Reaching for the towel I dropped on the floor, he wraps it around me before taking my hand and leading me out of the bedroom and into the hallway.

Grinning like an idiot, I follow him, knowing I’d follow him pretty much anywhere.

ChapterTwenty-Two

Sawyer

“You not going in the hot tub too, son?” my dad asks as he sits next to me on the leather sofa in the living room. Glancing through the large picture windows that look out onto the patio, I smile as I watch Hallie laughing.

“Nah. Hallie’s been stuck with me for almost two weeks. She needs some girl time.” He holds a bottle of beer out to me, and I hesitate. “I shouldn’t… I’m working.”

“We’re in the middle of nowhere, Sawyer. No one knows you’re here. One won’t hurt.” He gestures with his head to the bottle, and I grimace as I take it from his hand. I never drink when I’m working. I need to be fully focused. But hell, it’s been a rough few days, and he’s right, we’re safe here.

“Just the one then,” I say as I clink my bottle with his. We sit in comfortable silence for a few minutes, and I find myself staring out of the window at Hallie. It’s the first time I’ve seen her properly relax the entire time I’ve been with her. I’ve tried to take her mind off everything as much as I can, but it looks like Brooke has the magic touch. I wonder what they’re talking about.

“She’s not going anywhere, Sawyer,” my dad says with a chuckle.

“Huh?” I mutter, tearing my eyes off Hallie.

“Your girl.” He gestures with his head to the hot tub. “She’s not going anywhere.”

“Force of habit. She’s not been this far away from me in two weeks.”

“Seems you’ve got it bad.”
