“What?” I ask in disbelief. “He followed us,” I mutter to myself, knowing for sure now that I’d been too wrapped up in Hallie to do my job properly.

“It seems that way. I’m guessing he’s been watching Hallie all along.”

“He must have thought we were heading back to my place. Thank God we lost him when we left the island.” Dragging my fingers through my hair, I pace up and down. “Does anyone else know where Hallie and I are?”

“Just me and Wilmot. You’re safe, man.”

“I’d better go and check on Hallie. Call me if you hear anything.”

“I will. Stay safe, Sawyer.” I end the call and silently climb the stairs back up to the second floor. Pushing gently on my bedroom door, I watch a sleeping Hallie from the doorway. Despite only leaving her ten minutes ago, she’s fast asleep. Crossing the room, I sit on the edge of the bed, my hand resting on her sleeping form. I pull my phone from my pocket and send a quick message to Brooke, telling her I’m staying with Hallie and won’t be back downstairs tonight. She replies with a sarcastic comment which I ignore, placing my phone on the nightstand.

After taking a quick shower, I pull on some sleep shorts and slide into bed next to Hallie. She’s still fast asleep, her breathing even. When I turn off the lamp on the nightstand, the room is plunged into darkness. The only light is from a small sliver of the moon that finds its way through the drapes. As I lie staring at the ceiling, the earlier conversation with Logan replays in my mind. Bryant must have followed us from Hallie’s apartment to mine, and then from there to Hilton Head Island. I can’t believe I didn’t notice someone tailing us on either journey. I’d fucked up and put Hallie in danger. Something I swore I’d never do.

Rolling onto my side, I find my eyes have adjusted to the dark room, and I can make out Hallie’s face on the pillow next to mine. Her long dark lashes rest on the skin under her eyes, and her flawless face looks so peaceful as she sleeps. I should never have crossed the line with her and jeopardized her safety. I should have waited until all of this was over. But I didn’t, and now there’s no going back. She means everything to me, and I can’t give her up. I’m in too deep. I’m damn good at my job, and I don’t trust anyone else to protect her. I must stay focused.

“Sawyer, is that you?” Hallie asks, her voice thick with sleep.

“Yeah, baby. It’s me. Go back to sleep.” She sighs contentedly and pushes her body against mine. Wrapping my arms around her, I pull her close, her head resting on my bare chest.

“How long have I been asleep?” she asks.

“Not long. I didn’t mean to wake you.” I brush my lips against her head, and she pushes herself up on my chest, her face level with mine.

“You didn’t go down and spend time with your parents, did you?”

“No.” She drops her forehead on my chest, and I tangle my hand in her hair. “I wanted to be with you.”

“Your family must think I’m so needy.”

“I’m pretty sure they know it’s me wanting to be with you and nothing to do with you being needy, sweetheart,” I tell her with a chuckle. “Plus, I know you’re safe if you’re with me.”

She tenses in my arms and lifts her head. “Has something else happened?” Her voice comes out as a whisper, and I tighten my hold on her.

“No, Hallie. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.” I’m not being totally honest with her, but she doesn’t need to know we found Bryant’s car and especially not where it was. If what Logan said was right, then Wilmot is close to catching the bastard, and I’ll soon be able to tell her this is all over. She finally relaxes, and her fingers trace circles across my chest as she lies at my side. My cock twitches as her fingers continue to brush over my skin, and I drag my hand up and down her arm, itching to touch her more. When I can’t take it any longer, I flip her onto her back. A squeal escapes her lips as my body slides over hers.

“Your touch is driving me crazy,” I whisper in her ear, my lips finding the hollow of her neck. A shiver passes over her body as my mouth brushes over her skin, eventually finding her lips. My hand slips under her T-shirt, and her skin feels like silk under my fingers. She gasps as my finger brushes her nipple.

“Sawyer,” she whispers against my lips. I roll her nipple between my fingers, feeling it pebble under my touch. Needing to see her, I pull my hand away and lift her T-shirt up and over her head, tossing it on the floor. Despite the room being dark, I can see her cheeks flush as her arms come across her body, hiding herself from me.

I frown. “Don’t hide from me, baby. You’re beautiful.”

“I’ve never… I’ve never done this before,” she whispers, her eyes fixed on my chest.

Leaning down, I capture her lips with mine. “We don’t have to do anything you aren’t ready for. You’re in control, baby,” I whisper, resting my forehead on hers. I pull back when she stays silent and wait for her eyes to meet mine. She’s biting down on her bottom lip, and I know she wants to say something.

“Talk to me.”

“I want you to touch me.” She hesitates. “It felt good.”

Smiling at her, I push a stray piece of her hair off her face. I want nothing more than to make her feel good, but I can tell she’s nervous and I want her to be comfortable with me.

“We’ll go slow, sweetheart.”

She reaches her arms around my neck, pulling my face to hers. She kisses me, and the noise that escapes her lips as I push my tongue into her mouth makes my cock jump. The thin material of my sleep shorts does nothing to hide my erection, and I try not to push against her, not wanting to freak her out. As my lips move down her neck and my mouth finds her nipple, she lifts her hips, gasping as she grinds herself against my hard cock.

“Oh, God,” she mumbles, her hands tugging on my hair.

Releasing her nipple my hand slides down to the edge of her panties. “Is this okay?” I ask as I run my finger under the elastic of her panties.
