“There were pictures, Sawyer. Pictures of you and Hallie.”

“What? Pictures from when?”

He sighs, and my stomach rolls. “Pictures of you both leaving your apartment on the bike, and pictures of you on the beach in Hilton Head Island…” he trails off.

“Fuck! Anything from here at the cabin?”

“No. Nothing.”

“Did they find anything else? Anything that might tell us where he is now?”

“No. We still have no idea.” I drag my hand through my hair and groan inwardly. We’re still no closer to nailing this bastard. “We’re watching the warehouse if he does come back. The cops are throwing every resource they have at this, Sawyer. They’ll get him.”

“I hope so, Logan.”

“I’ll let you know if anything else comes up.”

I end the call, tossing my phone onto the bed. The bastard had been following us. I knew I’d missed something. Sighing, I lie on the bed and close my eyes, wondering how much longer this can go on. He has to mess up soon. This asshole’s luck has to run out at some point.

I jolt awake when I hear a knock on the door, realizing I must have fallen asleep. Rubbing my hand down my face, I sit up. “Come in,” I call out.

Watching the door open, I smile as Hallie stands in the doorway wearing my T-shirt. “Hey, baby. Did you sleep well?”

She nods, and I climb off the bed. Crossing the room, I take her hand, gently pulling her inside. “You okay?” She nods again, and I can see she’s nervous. I lead her to the bed and sit, patting the space next to me. “Sit down, sweetheart. I think we need to talk.”

“We do?”

“Yeah, baby. We do.” I squeeze her hand, and she sits, a noticeable gap between us. “Nothing has changed for me, Hallie. I want to be with you.”

“But, Logan, your job—”

“Hallie, I had already decided this was going to be my last assignment. I want a normal relationship, not one where I’m away from you for weeks at a time. Once this is over and Bryant is caught, I’m resigning.”

She turns to me and frowns. “Resigning? But you love your job.”

“I love you more.”

She shakes her head. “I can’t let you do this, Sawyer. You’ll end up resenting me.”

“Do you remember that first morning in your apartment when I cooked you breakfast?”

“Bacon and scrambled eggs. Yeah, I remember.” She smiles, and her cheeks flush pink. I raise my eyebrows as she blushes.

“What else are you remembering?” I wrap my arm around her waist and pull her against me. She giggles. I love hearing her laugh.

“That was the morning I realized how hot you were. I’d known you less than twenty-four hours but found you practically naked in my kitchen.”

“Practically naked? I had sleep shorts on,” I exclaim with a chuckle.

“Yeah, and no shirt! Sawyer, I’d never even kissed a guy then, let alone had a half-naked one in my kitchen.”

I laugh again and hold up my hands. “Okay, point taken. You thought I was hot, though?” I bump her shoulder with mine, and she rolls her eyes. “I’ll take that as a yes. Anyway, that was the morning you asked me what I did before I was a CPO, and although I was a little vague, I told you I was a cop.”

“I remember,” she whispers.

“I loved being a cop. It’s what I’d always wanted to do since I was a kid. I’d been with the Tybee Island Police Department for five years before, one night, it all went to shit.”

Hallie reaches for my hand, and when my eyes meet hers, she gives me a sad smile. “You don’t have to tell me, Sawyer. I can see how hard it is for you.”
