“I knew it! I’m so excited for you. Do you think anything else will happen?”
“I hope so,” I say quietly.
“You like him, don’t you?”
“I really like him, Jess.”
She will know how much of a big deal this is for me. She knows how difficult I’ve found it to interact with guys, let alone try to date anyone.
“Hallie, he’d be crazy if he didn’t see how amazing you are.”
“I love you,” I tell her, my voice breaking.
“I love you too. Will you call again?”
“Yeah, I’ll call you again in a few days. I’ve missed talking to you so much.”
“Knock, knock,” Sawyer says as the door to the bedroom opens.
“Hey, I’d better go. Sawyer’s here.” I flash him a smile as he crosses the room, a tray full of food in his hands.
“I would say something inappropriate, but I don’t want to make you blush in front of him,” she teases. “Seriously though, Hal, stay safe.”
“I will. Bye, Jess.” I end the call and sit down on Sawyer’s bed.
“Sorry, sweetheart. I didn’t mean to interrupt your call with Jess,” Sawyer says as he puts the tray on the dresser and sits next to me.
“That’s okay. We were pretty much done anyway.” I hand him his phone and take him by surprise when I climb onto his lap. His hands go under my T-shirt, his fingers landing on my waist.
“You okay?” he asks, his fingers stroking my skin. Goosebumps erupt on my stomach at his touch, and I love the feel of his hands on me. I lower my head to kiss him. He groans when my tongue pushes into his mouth. As I deepen the kiss, he pulls me against his hard erection. He peppers kisses along my jaw and down my neck.
“I’ll take that as a yes,” he mutters against my skin.
“I want everyone to know you’re mine,” I whisper.
“I want that too.” His breath is hot against my skin, and I shiver.
“I wanted to tell Jess so badly I’d fallen in love with you.”
He lifts his head, his eyes finding mine. “What did you tell her?”
“Only that we’d kissed. She was telling me how amazing Grayson is, and I wanted to tell her how incredible you are. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said anything, but I trust her. She won’t tell anyone.” My words come out in a rush, and I drop my eyes from his.
“Hey, look at me.” He waits until I lift my head. “Don’t apologize. I love that you want to tell everyone about us, and we can when all this is over. I need to be here with you until Bryant is caught. I’d go crazy if I weren’t here to protect you.”
“I’d go crazy too,” I whisper. He squeezes my waist, his fingers digging into my skin. “As much as I want to strip you naked and make love to you, you’re not ready for that. So, let’s eat, and then Brooke wants to play poker if you’re up for it?”
Heat pools in my stomach at his admission, and his eyes drop to my mouth when my tongue darts out to lick my lips. As nervous as I am, I want to be with him. I’ve waited forever to meet the perfect guy, and now that I have, I don’t want to wait any longer. I love him, and he loves me. I know he won’t break my heart.
“I think I like the sound of your plan better,” I say quietly.
His eyes widen as a slow smile appears on his face. “You do? Are you sure?”
“I’ve never been more sure of anything,” I tell him, repeating his words from earlier back to him. He holds my gaze as if he’s expecting me to change my mind. I take his face in my hands. “I want you, Sawyer.”
He stands up with me in his arms, my legs automatically going around his waist as he climbs onto the bed, placing me gently on his pillow. His body hovers over mine, his hand pushing a piece of stray hair behind my ear before his lips brush kisses against the hollow of my neck. I drag my hands through his hair, pulling his mouth to mine. As I kiss him, my whole body ignites, a now-familiar ache beginning to build between my legs. Nervous excitement bubbles in my stomach, but I’m desperate to feel his hands on me.
Reaching underneath Sawyer’s top, my hands find his hard chest, my fingers stroking over his skin. Suddenly, he pulls out of the kiss and sits up, pulling his T-shirt over his head. I sit up on my elbows as he tosses it onto the floor.
