“Why are you blushing, Hallie? What are you thinking about?” Sawyer asks as he slides beside me, his arm snaking around my waist. My cheeks flush hotter knowing he’s caught me, and I giggle, covering my face with my hands.

“You know exactly what I’m thinking about.” I groan through my hands, and he chuckles as he pulls my hands away.

“Were you thinking of my hot tongue on your clit?” he asks, his voice low and husky.

My eyes widen at his dirty talk. “Are you trying to drive me crazy? Because if you are, it’s working,” I tell him, sounding breathless.

Before he can reply, his phone rings, and he groans.

“Hold that thought, baby. As much as I want to finish this conversation, it’s Logan, and I need to take the call.” He smiles apologetically, and I smile back, letting him know it’s fine.

Reaching into the back pocket of my jean shorts, I pull out my phone. Although I can’t use it for calls or texts, Sawyer told me if I put it in airplane mode, I could use the Kindle app and read. I haven’t read anything in ages, and I’m looking forward to getting lost between the pages of a good book.

Flopping on one of the sun loungers, my eyes flick to Sawyer, who seems deep in conversation with Logan. The conversation is becoming heated, and he drags his hand through his hair before turning to me, gesturing with his head that he’s going inside. I stand, knowing he won’t want me outside alone.

Stopping on the patio, I put my phone into the front pocket of my shorts and reach for the can of soda I’d brought outside with me. Looking into the house, Sawyer’s standing on the other side of the living room, his back to me. As I go to join him, an arm circles my waist, pulling me backward. Screaming, I drop the can in my hand, soda exploding all over the patio. Sawyer spins around as the barrel of a gun is pressed against my temple.

“Hello, Hallie,” a voice growls in my ear.

My eyes widen, and fear erupts in my stomach as I recognizethatvoice. It’s one I’ll never forget and one I hoped I’d never have to hear again.

“Let her go, Bryant,” Sawyer yells, his gun held out in front of him.

“Not a fucking chance.” He starts to walk backward, taking me with him. He moves the gun from my head and points it at Sawyer. “Take one more step, and I’ll shoot. She’s coming with me.”

“No!” I cry. “Please don’t hurt him. I’ll go with you.”

“Hallie, no!” Sawyer shouts.

My eyes lock with Sawyer’s, and I silently plead with him, even though he won’t willingly let me go. I can’t let anything happen to him. I couldn’t live with myself if he got hurt because of me.

“I’m sorry, Sawyer. Were you hoping you’d get to fuck her in the hot tub again? I hate ruining your plans.”

Nausea rolls through my stomach, and a cold sweat breaks out on the back of my neck.

“You were watching. You son of a bitch,” Sawyer exclaims, taking a step toward us.

“Stop!” Matt shouts, bringing the cold metal of the gun back to my temple.

Sawyer stops dead in his tracks, his eyes flicking to me.

“And I did more than watch, Sawyer. It was hot.”

“You fucking bastard.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll make sure she’s not lonely tonight.”

I gasp at his words, knowing exactly what he’s threatening, and he means every word. He moves the gun from my temple and strokes the barrel down my cheek. I move my face away from him before leaning over, my body retching.

A gunshot sounds out, and I scream, praying it’s not Matt who fired the bullet. Matt’s arm drops from around my waist, and I fall to the ground. A gun falls next to me, and I snatch it up, scurrying backward and away from him.

“Come to me, baby,” Sawyer says urgently. Looking up, relief floods my body as he stands over Matt, who’s on the floor clutching his shoulder. There’s blood oozing from the wound as he writhes in pain. Sawyer still has his gun drawn and pointed at Matt as I crawl across the decking toward him. “Get behind me,” he says, and I whimper, my whole body shaking.

“How long have you been watching us?” Sawyer asks through gritted teeth. When he doesn’t answer, he presses his foot onto Matt’s shoulder.

“Argh!” Matt screams.

“How.Fucking.Long?” Sawyer bites out, pushing down harder on Matt’s shoulder.
