She lets out a breath before giving me a small smile. “I wasn’t sure what you wanted me to do. I don’t want to get you in trouble.”

She looks unsure, and I hate that Logan made her feel like that. I need to speak to him and soon.

“You won’t get me in trouble, baby. Come here.” I hold out my hand, and she comes to me. “Are you okay?” I lead her to the bed, pulling her down to sit next to me.

“I’m okay. Relieved it’s all over.” She pauses and looks across at me. “Where have they taken him?”

“To the hospital, but he’s under heavy guard. Once he’s been treated, he’ll be back behind bars.” She rests her head on my shoulder, her hand still enveloped in mine.

“Thank you,” she whispers.

“What for?”

“For protecting me.”

“There was no way I was letting him take you, Hallie. No way.”

“How do you think he found me?”

“I don’t know, baby. I didn’t think anyone had followed us. He’ll be questioned when he’s been treated. Hopefully, they’ll get something out of him.”

“Where’s Poppy? Is she okay?”

“She’s still with the EMTs. They’ll take care of her.” She yawns. She must be exhausted after everything that’s happened today. “Shall we go home?”

“Logan said you needed to be debriefed.”

“Screw that. I want to take my girl home. Debriefing can wait.” Standing up, I pull her into my arms. “Have you got everything?”

She laughs and looks down. “I’m wearing everything I came with.”

“Good point. We did come a little light on stuff. Let’s go home.” I take her hand, but she doesn’t move.

“Sawyer, can you take me to my parents’ house? I don’t think I can go back to my apartment. Not yet.”

I nod but don’t say anything. I knew she wouldn’t want to go back to her apartment, but I hoped she’d want to stay at my place. I don’t want to push her, though. She’s going to want to spend some time with her parents after everything that’s happened.

When we get downstairs, most of the cops have gone. The detective I spoke to earlier is talking to Logan, and I squeeze Hallie’s hand as we walk into the living room. Logan turns as he hears us enter, his eyes dropping to our joined hands. He says something to the detective, who nods and walks out.

“Where’s Poppy?” Hallie asks him as we get closer.

“The EMTs have taken her to be checked over at the hospital in Summerville. Her parents are on their way.” His eyes flick between us before landing back on me. “Sawyer, can I have a word?”

Hallie drops my hand and takes a few steps back. “I could do with a soda. I’ll be in the kitchen.”

“Hallie—”

“It’s okay, Sawyer,” she says, cutting me off. “Talk to Logan.”

I step toward her and brush her lips with mine. “I won’t be long.”

I watch her retreating as she walks toward the kitchen. Turning around, Logan’s frowning.

“You lied to me.” I can hear the hurt in his voice, and I sigh, dragging my hand through my hair.

“I’m sorry, man. I knew you’d pull me off the case.”

“Damn right I’d have pulled you off the case. Fuck, Sawyer. You know the rules. Don’t get involved with a client.” He sounds disappointed, but I don’t regret what happened. I don’t regret Hallie.
