“I’m sorry I lied to you. Sawyer was assigned to protect me when Matt escaped. I said he was my brother’s friend as it seemed… well, easier.”

“You fell for your bodyguard! Hallie, that is so hot.” She wriggles her eyebrows at me, and I can’t help but laugh. I really have missed her.

“Yeah, I guess it is.”

“Have they caught the guy yet?” I look across to Sawyer, who gives me a small nod.

“Umm, yeah. Yesterday.”

“Good. I’m glad. I heard about your apartment. I’m sorry, Hallie.”

“Thank you. I’m going to be staying with Sawyer for a while. Maybe we could meet up for a drink soon?”

“That sounds good. We could go out, the six of us.”

“The six of us?” I ask.

“Yeah. You and Sawyer, me and Nick, and Jess and Grayson.”

“That sounds great. Drop me a message, and we can arrange something.”

She checks her watch. “Shit, I need to go. I’m late for my shift. It was so good to see you.” She pulls me in for another hug, whispering in my ear, “I want to know everything. We need a girls’ night! I’ll text you.” She pulls out of the hug and walks backward along the hallway. “Great to see you again, Sawyer.” She waves before spinning on her heel and running for the elevator.

“She’s still as crazy as she ever was,” Sawyer says as he picks up the bags and slings his arm around my shoulder. “Shall we go home?”

“Yes, please.”

My mind wanders back to Sawyer’s question in the bathroom.Could his place be my home?I think, deep down, wherever he is will feel like home. I need my head to catch up with my heart. I hope it doesn’t take too long.

ChapterThirty-Six

Sawyer

Hallie’s made herself at home in the few days since we got back from her apartment, and I love it. Her clothes are hanging in my closet, and her toothbrush and girly shit sit is on the glass shelf in the bathroom. I fall asleep with her in my arms and wake up wrapped around her. I finally feel like I’m exactly where I should be. I’ve had a couple of girlfriends in the past, but Hallie isthe one, I’m sure of it.

The news of Bryant’s capture and the rescue of Poppy hitCNNthe afternoon after we arrived back from the cabin. As predicted, the press swarmed to Hallie’s apartment, with Kitty messaging her to let us know. I was so glad she wasn’t there. She’s been through enough without having to face the paparazzi.

“So, Brooke’s been messaging,” Hallie says as we lie in bed, her head resting on my chest.

“Is she boring you to death with wedding talk?” I joke.

She hits me on the chest before sitting up. “No!” She bites her lip. “It is about the wedding though… kind of.” I smile to myself, knowing precisely what Brooke’s been messaging her about.

“She’s asking you to her bachelorette party, isn’t she?” She smiles. “You don’t have to ask me if you can go, Hallie.”

Logan messaged earlier to let me know Bryant had been released from the hospital and was back behind bars in Iowa. There is no reason for Hallie not to go, and I knew she’d wanted to when Brooke had asked her at the lake.

“You wouldn’t mind if I went?”

“No, baby. I wouldn’t. I’ll miss you, but I want you to have fun.” Her face lights up with a smile, and I grin back at her. “I can take you. The girls are meeting up tomorrow, aren’t they?”

“Actually, Brooke has said I can bring a friend or two, so I’ve mentioned it to Jess. She’s offered to drive.”

“Okay, if she’s sure. Is Kitty going too?”

She shakes her head. “She’s working and can’t find anyone to swap her shift with, so it’s only me and Jess. I’ll message Brooke and Jess now.” Her eyes dance with excitement as she types out a message on her phone. I’m definitely going to miss her but I love how much she’s looking forward to doing something on her own. After everything she’s been through, she deserves to enjoy herself.

“I’ll miss you,” she whispers after she’s finished on the phone.
