“Not even remotely,” I admit.

If he thinks it’s strange we’re not close, he doesn't comment on it. Instead, he tactfully changes the subject. “So, you're from the city. What do you do up there?”

“I'm in advertising.”

He whistles under his breath.

“What about you?” I peek at him as I continue to stroke Rosie. “Have you ever lived in the city?”

He laughs a deep, booming laugh like I've said something hilariously funny. “Me? Hell, no, darlin’. I hate the city. I need fresh air to keep me sane.”

I admire how his chest muscles flex against his shirt when he laughs. He notices me watching him and sobers. My breath catches as we gaze at one another. He stares at me intensely, like he’s trying to see into my soul.

“Do you want to get a bite to eat?” He finally breaks the silence.

“Oh.” I bite my lip as I hesitate. This man and I are polar opposites, and I made a terrible first impression on him, but he seems to have easily forgiven me.

“I promise I won't bite Emily—or step on you again,” he adds with a hint of a smile.

I laugh and hear myself agreeing. “Sure, why not?”
