Chapter Three

Bennet

“Enough!” my brother barks, striding around his desk to seize Rhylie’s throwing arm. I hope that the brat isn’t ambidextrous though. “What did I say about broken glass, Rhylie? Sit down!” I can hear the amusement in his voice has given way to annoyance. “Both of you! I don’t have time for this shit today.”

Amazingly, she listens to Cole and does as he asks. I guess even someone as foolish as her can tell when the boss doesn’t want to be messed with. As she sits and I take the seat beside, but a safe distance away from her, she throws an evil glare my way.

In the moment of tense silence that follows, I take a minute to study my brother. Cole’s jacket, cuffs, and top three buttons are undone - no tie, of course - and his dark hair is standing on end like he’s been running his fingers through it in agitation. His face is sporting more than just his usual five o’clock shadow and his shrewd hazel eyes look tired.

Fuck. Maybe sending Rhylie in here again wasn’t a good idea. Maybe I should be dealing with her myself.

“What seems to be the problem here?” he asks, rubbing his temples like he’s already heard enough and is beyond stressed by this drama. But before I can explain how, yet again, Rhylie has well and truly fucked up, the little brat jumps in first.

“I can’t work for him! You have to transfer me. He’s a horrible boss.”

“Is that so?” A ghost of a smile plays on my brother’s lips. “And why, exactly, is that?”

“He’s impossible! An absolute perfectionist. Nothing I do is ever good enough. All he does is complain - even when I bring him coffee!”

“You threw it all over me!” I exclaim.

“See? Never happy!” she pouts.

Fuck my life; her bee-stung lips have me wanting to watch her wrap them around my cock. That sure as hell would be one way to shut her up.

“So, he should have been grateful that you poured hot coffee on him?” Cole asks, amused.

“Well, no, but grateful that I got the coffee in the first place!” she cries.

“That’s your job!” I point out.

“But still, a thank you would be nice.”

“I’ll thank you when you finally do something - no, make that anything - right!” I tell her hotly.

“See? That’s hurtful!” she pins me with a withering look before turning to my brother. She looks at him like he hung the fucking moon. “I’m better than this, I swear I am Mr. Carter, but he makes me so nervous that I’m being clumsy and making mistakes. The more he shouts, the worse I get.”

“I see,” Cole contemplates her bullshit and I want to smack him. “And what would you have me do?”

“Fire him?” she asks hopefully, and my jaw just about hits the floor.

Cole laughs lightly.

“Well, that might be a little difficult, Ms. Hall, seeing as my brother Bennet here is a co-founder and partner of this company.”

“Founder? Partner? Brother?” The red indignant anger drains from her face, leaving her ghostly white and worried.

All the fight leaves her in an instant and she sags in her chair like she knows she just fucked up.
