“He did,” I whisper before clamping my mouth shut. I didn’t mean to say that.

“He’s a douchebag.”

“He told me I’m not capable of being loved. Only used and discarded. Which he did blindingly well. So yeah, excuse me if I don’t buy into the bullshit that I’m suddenly the walking fantasy of not one, but four insanely hot guys!”

“Well, we have a lifetime for me to prove him and you wrong. But I’m going to start right away. Let’s go for that shower.”

“Shower? I’m down for that!” A new voice comes from behind me, making me jump. I spin around to find Oakley coming through the patio doors looking like sex and sin.

“Don’t you own a shirt?” I gripe, my eyes greedily drinking in his huge chest and bare arms. Holy hell those arms make me melt. “You look like legs on a stick,” I snap.

He roars with laughter, and my eyes cut to Ash who’s also chuckling, and my cheeks heat.

“What?”

“What the hell does that mean?”

“It’s a saying. Haven’t you heard of it?”

“Legs on a stick? No I can’t say I have!” He guffaws in his rich deep baritone, the vibrations rumbling all the way through to my toes. I squirm with embarrassment as I realize I totally fucked up what I meant to say. What did I mean to say? One moment I was looking at his naked chest, thinking he looks like sex on legs, and the next I got distracted by his wonderful skull crushing arms and was thinking he’s sex on a stick. What came out of my mouth was a jumbled, garbled mess.

“Fuck me,” I murmur under my breath.

“You don’t have to ask me twice sweetheart.” The incubus grins at me.

I’m just about to retort when I’m interrupted by Ash’s pager going off. I groan. He’s going to disappear and leave me all alone with the incubus. I’m not safe. I’m bound to make a fool of myself.

“Baby, I’m really sorry, I have to go.” Ash looks at me with apologetic eyes and regret lining every inch of his face. He looks as gutted as I feel for our ‘date’ to be over.

“It’s fine. Go save the world.” I smile, rising to my feet and crossing to kiss him. “I’m sorry you didn’t get your shower.”

“Our shower.” He winks. “Rain check on that, but I promise we’ll get there.”

“I had a great time, thank you.”

Oakley watches our exchange intently and then smirks at me once we’re alone.

“So I take it you had a good night then, sweetheart.” He winks at me and gives me a leer that should make me mad but just heats the hell out of my skin. “I’m stuffed. Couldn’t eat a bite.”

I frown, because I didn’t ask him if he wanted food. He roars and stares pointedly at my robe until the penny drops.

“I’m going for a shower,” I grumble as he continues to laugh and I stomp away.

When I’ve finished in the shower, I take my time getting dressed and doing my hair and makeup ready for the day. I almost manage to forget about Oakley waiting downstairs. As I descend, I tell myself that he won’t be here now, but of course he is.

“You’re fast becoming a pain in my ass. You’re worse than Linden.”

“Sweetheart, I would never cock block you,” he says sincerely.

“Wow, I think that’s the first serious thing you’ve said to me.”

“I never joke or lie about sex.”

“Why would someone lie about sex?”

“People do all the time.” He shrugs. “Like, I won’t lie to you. I’m shocked as shit that we have some weird freaky kind of connection going on, but I’m not about to deny it. I can’t wait to taste you.”

“We’ve already kissed,” I point out. “You know what I taste like.”

“Oh, little miss Jasmine, that is not what I meant at all.”

If Ash gave me a wolfish smile which revealed his predatory nature, it was nothing compared to the look Oakley is giving me right now: purely demonic. I shiver under his searing gaze, hating the way he can make me burn for him with a single look, but have me trembling in ice-cold fear too.
