There’s a moment of peace before all hell breaks loose with everyone talking at once. Ash holds out his hand for silence. I’m not sure what shocks me more: the move, or the way everyone listens to him.

“I know where Jasper is,” he announces.

“Where?” I cry. “Let’s go!”

“Wait, Jas,” he tells me. “It’s not that simple.”

I frown, because why the hell is it not that simple? He knows where my puppy is; we should be in the truck already! I glower at him.

“Explain.”

“It sounds like he’s in the dragon village. But it’s right on the outskirts of town. The far side. There’s no way that little pup found his way all the way over there without...help.”

Ash is saying something about contacting the clan leader because of how temperamental dragons can be, and that barging into their territories could be seen as an act of war, but I’m barely listening. My mind is racing a mile a minute. How quickly can I get there in my truck? What would I do once I got there? Could I find Jasper all on my own?

“The question is, why was Jasper taken?”

“And, more importantly, who the hell took him?”

“And how is that fucker still getting in?”

The only person not talking right now, is Linden. He’s watching me intently. It makes my skin itch.

“You guys want a drink?” I blurt out, racing to the kitchen before anyone can answer, needing to escape Linden’s stare and all of the questions.

No such luck though.

“I know what you’re planning.” Linden’s voice behind me makes me jump out of my skin in fright.

“Jeez! Don’t do that!” I snap at him.

“Don’t do what you’re planning then,” he counters.

“And what’s that then?” I challenge him.

“You’re going to race off on your own to try and save Jasper.” Before I can open my mouth to protest—aka lie—he interrupts me. “And that’s really not a good idea. Don’t race off alone. Wait, and we can all work together.”

“Well, that just proves that we’re not bonded then, doesn’t it?” I cry, angry. “Because that is not what I’m thinking of doing, at all!”

I stomp back into the lounge where the others are and they all spin to face me.

“What’s wrong, Jas?”

I sense, rather than see, Linden enter the room behind me. I have no idea how he managed to suss me out so quickly when the others are so clueless.

“I’m sorry, guys,” I say sadly. And I am, I really am. I mutter the words to the spell under my breath, finishing with the command, “Sleep.”

Around me, the four guys I’ve come to care way too much about, drop to the floor, in a deep spell-induced slumber.

“Sorry,” I whisper to their sleeping forms as I slip out the door, snatching the keys to my truck on the way.
