“I’ll pass thanks. So if you could just toss me the keys to the manacle, I’ll be taking my dog and leaving.”

“Oh you mean these keys?” He grins, holding up the set of keys and dangling them enticingly on his little finger. I take a step toward him to grab them, but I’m jerked backwards. Dread fills me, and I slowly look down. There, just as it was in my vision, tied around my ankle is the manacle that had once enslaved Jasper.

“How did you do that?” There’s no hiding it now; my fear is palpable, vibrating on the air between us.

“I’m not just a dragon, like you’re not just a human.”

“I guess we both kept secrets,” I reply dryly.

“I’d wager that I know more about you than you do about me.”

“Well, stalking a person does tend to yield more information than my current method,” I snark.

“Oh, and pray tell, what has your method been?”

“Pretending you’re dead.”

He laughs maniacally like I’ve just made a joke. I’m serious though. Escaping Jude, moving to a new country and starting a new life for myself were only the first steps taken in trying to heal from the damage he did.

“Why now, Jude?” I ask quietly. It doesn’t make sense. “How did you find me?” That earns me another crazy laugh. While he’s distracted, I silently cast every spell—Light and Dark—that I can think of to release the manacle, but nothing seems to work. Do dragons have special witch-repellent magic? Or is this part of his ‘not just a dragon’ status? What is he? Aside from a stone-cold psycho, that is.

“I always knew where you were.”
