“Sacha Korina Green!” I yell, kicking open the door to my apartment and then wincing when it makes the gash on my leg smart. “I’m never letting you set me up on a date ever again!”

“Shush! You’ll wake Ade!” Sacha hisses at me from the couch where she hasn’t looked away from the show she’s watching.

“Ooooh, I love The Home Edit!” I cry, momentarily distracted.

Sacha finally drags her eyes away from the screen, only to pass them around the open plan living space that I share with Ade. It’s messy, but clean.

“You need The Home Edit team.”

“Please. I have a kid. There’s no point.”

“Because you have a kid is the exact reason why you need them. Maybe I could speak to Zoe at The Cleanly Den for you? They usually just do cleaning, but maybe I can talk her into branching out into organizational systems. Goddess knows you need one.”

“Thanks, but I’ll take a hard pass on that. I’m done with any of your suggestions after tonight!”

“What happened?” She sighs. “How did you get back? I didn’t hear your car rattling up the street from a mile away.”

“I shifted and flew home.”

“What form did you try this time?” Sacha asks curiously. She loves everything about my being an elemental shifter, including how I can take the form of any animal which is harmonized with my element, air. I also have an affinity for water, but I try to keep that on the down low. Try being the key word. Mostly, I fail.

“Kestrel. I figured it was small enough to be inconspicuous, but quick.”

“Smart. So, what went wrong? He’s a nice guy, has a really nice car…I bet you didn’t even give him a chance.”

“You set me up on a date with a class A douche canoe!” I cry. “How many chances did I need to give him? You know, he actually heaved when my blood got on him!”

“Blood? What the hell kinda date did you go on? I thought you were going skating!”

“We did. He fell and cut my leg.” I point to my best jeans which are now ruined. “You can pay for these.”

“They were mine anyway!”

“What? Oh. Sorry. I’d like a replacement pair, please,” I say sheepishly. I’m always stealing Sacha’s clothes, to the point where I have no idea what’s mine and what’s hers anymore. I never return anything.

“I’m surprised he fell over. He told me he was a great skater. Did you know he could have gone—”

“Pro? Yes, I know. He mentioned it. And the Olympics. He also lied. Bambi was better on ice than that moron.”

“Harsh.”

“He was a low-key racist.”

“What do you mean low key? You can’t be ‘low-key’ racist. You either are, or you’re not.”

“He’d be the sort of person to say ‘I’m not racist, some of my servers in restaurants are Black, but…’”

“Did he actually say that?”

“Well, no. But you didn’t see him, Sach. He was so shocked when he saw me.”

“Yeah, cause you’re a knockout!”

“And he kept asking me where I’m from and if I’ve ever seen snow before. He didn’t seem impressed when I said I was from France, and he even asked about my parentage!”

“Okay. He’s a dick. And yes, he sounds like a racist dick. BUT I am really surprised. I mean, he seems like a super nice guy whenever I talk to him.”
