“Then what happened?”

“Pain. Really bad pain to the back of the head.”

“Then?”

“Another blow, falling to the ground, one more and black…”

“Can you remember anything else, any sounds or sensations?”

“Being lifted, put in a vehicle. Doors closing. A motorcycle engine.”

“Well done cariño, you did well. Do you want to have a rest now?” Tex suggests.

“Yeah.” She sighs. Without opening her eyes, she rolls over and promptly falls asleep. I stare at him incredulously but when I open my mouth to speak he shakes his head and points out to the lounge, so I get up quietly and leave, Tex following after me. He quietly closes Callie’s door behind him.

“Will she remember?”

“Probably not.”

“They usually do,” I point out.

“She won’t want to. Her mind has gone into a protective state. She’s blocking anything to do with the abduction.”

“You should have pushed for a name,” I insist but Tex shakes his head.

“I’m shocked I got that much out of her.”

“She knew him.” I swear softly under my breath.

“Not necessarily.”

“How do you figure?” I frown.

“She called him her love. I don’t think they’d ever met before.”

“Online?”

“Has to be.”

“Grooming?”

“Sadly.”

“Fuck! How long?”

“To get her to think she’s in love, to keep secrets from us, to sneak off in the night, to ignore her instincts and approach a stranger on a bike who refuses to show his face? I’d guess, a long time.”

I’m not sure how, but ice-cold dread and white-hot rage consume me, warring for dominance. I grind my teeth together and silently count to ten.

“What did I miss?” Devon asks, joining us in the lounge. He’s guarded, but definitely more relaxed than before he went into the shower.

“Tex, tell him. I can’t listen to it again.”

I stand up and pace, heading back to the kitchen. My beer’s empty, and I really do need something stronger. Do I still need a clear head?

I’m staring down the bottle of tequila like it holds all the answers to life’s mysteries when Devon comes into the kitchen a few minutes later. I look him over and he’s calm. Too calm.

“Want a job tonight?” he asks me.
