“What the fuck?”

I’m normally so much better at keeping my emotions in check but confusion has me slipping.

First, I wake to find Callie gone – which is a nightmare in itself – but then I find her on the couch in tears.

For a moment I was terrified it was because of what we had done, but when I realised it was just because of her waste of space mother, I felt like I could breathe.

Then she stole the air from my lungs with her bombshell: her mother tried to sell her? What the actual fuck?

“Sh-she said—”

I don’t wait for Callie to finish. I scoop her into my arms and drag her into my lap, cradling her to my chest. She sobs as I rub circles on her back, attempting to soothe her. When she’s a little less hysterical, I reach out and grab her phone, and send an emergency text to the others to get home.

They immediately call me back.

“What’s happened?” Devon demands.

“Callie’s mum called.” I hear East swear softly in the background. “Are you guys almost done? She’s pretty upset and we need to talk.”

“We’re on our way back. Probably twenty minutes out.”

“Oh, already?”

“Yeah. Job was much simpler than first anticipated but pretty pointless.”

“Gotcha.” A stab of disappointment lances through me. They think I don’t know what they were handling tonight, but I do. I couldn’t be too pissed at them when I got to spend the night with Callie in ways I only ever dreamed of, but it blows to hear it was a wasted trip.

Devon sighs.

“Well, do you wanna grab some takeout on the way?” I ask, bringing my attention back to the conversation.

“Sure thing. See you soon.”

I cut the call and notice that Callie has stopped crying.

“You didn’t have to call them,” she whispers softly, her face dejected. I can tell she’s beating herself up again, the only question is why? I hope she doesn’t regret what we did.

“They’d want me to. If you’re upset or hurting, we all want to know. We want to make it better.”

“I don’t think you can make this better.”

My heart sinks because she’s right of course, but I have to do something.

“No, but I can feed you and distract you until they get home, and make you only have to explain shit once.”

She twists in my lap so that she’s straddling me.

“Distract me, huh?”

Her lips quirk at the corners but the smile doesn’t reach her eyes. I understand the need for a distraction. Any distraction. I was out of my mind when we lost Callie and only pain would make being stuck in my head bearable. So if she needs to straddle me and grind on me, I’ll damn well kiss the memories out of her until my brothers get home.

Our lips meet and I devour her mouth like I can chase out every bad memory and experience she’s ever been subjected to. She melts into my kiss and the movement of her hips across my lap causes my cock to stir to life. She notices and wriggles a little more. It’s damn deliberate and I wonder where this little minx has come from.

Notthat I’m complaining.

All too soon the front door is banging open and we’re jumping apart guiltily. Damn. Why couldn’t they have been a couple of hours away?

“We brought Thai,” East calls out.
