“How so?”

“I’m not sure. But—”

“She should have been more freaked out than that,” Devon finishes.

“She was a wreck when I found her on the phone to her mum. Honestly? I think she’s emotionally strung out. It’s not sunk in yet. No doubt it’s going to be a rocky few days.”

While everything I just said is true, I’m also hoping it’s enough to distract them. I don’t even know where to begin explaining all that has happened between me and Callie tonight, and I wouldn’t feel comfortable disclosing anything until I’ve spoken to her and seen where her head is at.

“Tell me about your night,” I prompt.

Dev grabs a bottle of whiskey from the kitchen and returns, slamming it down on the coffee table as he drops to the floor.

“What the fuck? Callie drops a bombshell like that and you want to sit around talking?” He swigs long and hard from the bottle. “Fuck you. I say we go pay her mother a visit.”

“I just want to know how your ‘job’ went. I’m guessing it didn’t pay well in more than one sense of the word.”

“Sorry, Tex,” East apologises. “We needed someone here with Callie.”

“Yeah and it’s just as well it was you! I don’t know what I would have done if she got that call while I was here!” Dev cries.

“It’s fine. We had a good time until the call came through. Did you get anything?”

“Driver,” East confirms what we already suspected.

“Snivelling, useless, weaselly piece of shit he was. Knew fuck all.”

“Nothing at all?” Disappointment lances through me and my heart sinks.

“He gave us a couple of locations,” East clarifies. “The house we already searched where we know she was first held. And a storage facility we’ll check out first thing. He was also the driver, which we didn’t know.”

“Waste of time,” Devon mutters, still drinking from the bottle, obviously with no intention of sharing.

“It might be,” East concedes. “But we wouldn’t forgive ourselves if it turned out to be something.”

“Okay, I agree. And I agree with Dev that we need to visit Callie’s mum. Not tonight though. I also think…” I hesitate because I know this isn’t going to be a popular opinion. “I also think we should take Callie with us.”

“What?! Fuck, No!”

“I’m not so sure that’s a good idea.”

I expected Devon’s outburst but I thought East would at least hear me out.

“She’s going to need answers and closure. I think we’re all in agreement that Callie’s mum is the most toxic thing in her life, and we need to get rid of that. But she’ll never forgive us unless she knows why.”

“She wouldn’t forgive us anyway,” Devon mutters.

“She would if she knew who we are and what we do.”

“You’re fucking crazy! Did you hit your head or something? We can’t tell Callie the whole fucking truth!” He’s back on his feet, shaking with anger all over again.

“Maybe not all of it. But some of it,” I insist. I wish we had more resources at our disposal. This would all be so much easier if we weren’t tapped out on favours with The Order.

“No. No, fucking way. We’re not doing it…East, back me up here man.”

“I think Tex has a point.”

“What?”
