I flick open the folder and scan the first page, which holds basic details about the victim. It’s clear Reef has gone out of his way to get this girl’s file from the admin office, and I appreciate it. Everything’s included from her background, personal info, application form, even her old school transcripts and entrance essay. I skim the details I have in front of me, but nothing jumps out as being obvious as to why they’d target this girl. It also doesn’t make sense that they’d overlook the fact that this girl isn’t one of us. How did they not notice? Our kind so rarely become embroiled in drama with humans, and yet somehow they’ve killed one.

That’s perhaps the most terrifying thing about all of this.

I flip back to the front of the file, eyes finally landing on the photo that’s been paper clipped to the inside of the folder. A strong jolt hits me as I recognise the girl I’m staring at.

I blink and take a closer look.

On the second pass I realise it’s not actually her. It’s not the girl from the bar that I met last month and never saw again. Just someone who looks very similar. The victim, Alyssa Carter, has brown eyes and blonde hair like my girl, but the shades of each are off. Alyssa’s hair is darker, her eyes duller and smaller.

It makes my gut churn uncomfortably, and I suddenly understand Cove’s feelings of guilt. It also makes me more determined than ever to find the stranger from the bar. I scoured the island back in the summer, dismissing the idea that she could be a student because the start of the term was so far away and the kids rarely come over from the mainland that early.

Now I think I need to start looking closer to home. Because even though I’d like nothing more than to get to know the girl from the bar a little better – rules be damned because I’m not a real teacher anyway – I also think the coincidence is too strong to be ignored, and I actually need to find her.

Somehow she’s involved.

I’m just praying she’s not Shikari.
