I gasp the second the words are out of my mouth. I didn’t mean to say them. But then Cove smiles at me and everything is right with the world.

It’s the sort of smile that makes me think we’re on the exact same page about the kind of like we’re talking about. It makes me warmer than any blanket or cuddle from Cove ever could.

‘Lost’ by Dermot Kennedy plays and Cove softly croons the words to me. I never really understood the terms ‘melting’ or ‘swooning’ before where guys or romance were concerned. Until now. Cove singing to me about how I look through his eyes? Yeah, I’m suddenly every sappy heroine I mocked in all of those corny films Summer made me watch with her.

“What?” he asks when he notices me staring. I give him a soft smile in return and he pulls me even closer. Close enough that our noses actually touch and time stands still. The music fades, the ocean recedes, the partiers on the beach cease to exist. There’s only Cove and his beautiful smile and even lovelier soul.

This time when his lips touch mine, I don’t freak out. Because he feels more like home than even the ocean does for me. I groan into his kiss and he gently lowers me back onto the blanket without breaking contact with my lips. Sparks of golden light dance along my skin wherever he touches me and the connection between us feels magical.

Screams break our solitude, drawing us back to the present. And even though Cove breaks our kiss, he doesn’t move very far. He stays covering me like my own life-sized living hot water bottle and our heads turn in the direction of the shrieks still coming from further down the beach.

“Ignore them,” Cove whispers, turning back to kiss along my jawline and neck. Goosebumps trail in the wake of his lips, even though I’m not cold. I wrap my arms around his neck and pull him even closer.

Over his shoulder the sky is falling down in the most spectacular shower of shooting stars, but even their beauty can’t distract me from Cove’s kisses.

I let him pull me back into the little bubble of paradise where only we exist together, and like the lyrics from the song, I wonder if we can last beyond this night, or if we’re destined to crash and burn.
