He says this time, because there was a crazy moment when we were kids that I let them talk me into getting a brand. We were all meant to, and as the only girl gang member of the group, I had the honour of going first.

Only, the smell of my burning flesh and my screams were so bad, Spirit passed out and Son’s parents came running. We got caught, and now I’m the only one carrying that particular mark of our fateful friendship.

“A doe,” I whisper. There’s no answer. “Hello? Harry? Did you hear me?” Nothing. I take the phone from my ear and bring it up to my face to check if the call got cut off. It isn’t. As I bring it back to my ear, I catch the end of whatever Harry was saying.

“…this is fucking bad, Odi. I’ll be right there.”

The line goes dead.

“We’ll show you ours if you show us yours,” Axel promises.

“Why?” I scrunch my nose up in disgust, but I have to admit I’m more than a little curious.

“I want to see one. Don’t you?”

“Not really,” I lie.

“Well I do. And you’re my best friend. So it should be you that shows us, right? Don’t best friends do everything together?”

I guess he kind of has a point. We are best friends and we do most things together. But with Axel there’s always a pressure to do what he wants. I don’t always like it, but he’s older, bossier, and he can be a little scary if he doesn’t get his own way.

“I’m not going first,” I insist, caving under his intense dark stare.

“We’ll do it at the same time. Okay?”

I’m a little curious.

“Okay, on three. Everyone ready?”

I nod nervously. Zie and Kaiden do too, their hands going to the waistband of their swimmers. I hook my own fingers into my bikini bottoms and bite my lip in anticipation.

“1...2...3!”

I wrinkle up my nose.

“That’s disgusting.”

They laugh and go back to peeing all over the tiles surrounding the pool. I hastily yank up my bottoms and dive bomb into the cool water to hide my embarrassment. Boys are gross and I’ll never ever change my mind about that.

I don’t really know what all the fuss is about. Odile’s body isn’t that different to ours. Apart from the obvious. She’s straight up and down, and so are we.

It was my idea to look but it was Kaiden’s idea to pee. It was funny but Odile didn’t seem to think so. She hid in the pool for ages and she wouldn’t get out until we’d all cleaned the mess up.

She can be a bossy little thing sometimes. I quite like that. The boys don’t stand up to me like she does.

I won’t let her know that I like it though. Or that I listen to what she says and actually value her opinion as much as the boys.
