“Shit, what is that? A bear?” Roman asked. Hunter automatically reached for the rifle next to the sleeping bag but his hand hadn’t even closed around it when Champ came tearing through the woods and jumped onto the sleeping bag. The dog had gotten much bigger than Dane had thought he would and was still growing.

“Holy hell, Champ,” Roman groaned as he tried to yank his pants from underneath the dog’s heavy bulk. He was just righting himself when Champ jumped off the sleeping bag and took off towards the lake. Roman’s jeans snapped back and he nearly fell on his ass. Hunter began laughing hysterically.

“Damn dog,” Roman muttered. He was distracted by some more rustling and looked up just in time to see a patch of black and white waddle up to their campsite. “It’s just Lucy,” he called to the fleeing dog.

“Uh, Roman,” he heard Hunter say.

“Yeah.”

“That’s not Lucy.”

“What?” Roman asked as he looked up from the pants he was still trying to get on.

“Not Lucy,” Hunter called as he darted past him.

Roman looked down at the skunk, dropped his pants and took off running, stark naked, after Hunter.

The End

A Note to Readers

This book was particularly personal to me because of the way in which Hunter chose to deal with his pain.

As a survivor of self-injury/self-harming, I can tell you it is a very serious and traumatic condition and I would urge anyone who is suffering through it in silence to seek help. You have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of and there are many resources out there that can help you deal with the underlying issues that cause you to turn on yourself to seek relief from your pain.

Talk to a friend or a parent or a trusted loved one. Don’t be afraid to talk to a medical professional. What you are feeling inside is very real and there is no shame in asking for help.

This is just one of many sites that is a good place to start:

Please take care of yourself. You’re worth it.
