Beck shot me a slightly annoyed look. “Sorry,” I said, as I realized my instructions probably weren’t necessary. “Not used to being the patient.”

A smile flitted across his face. “I guess I should consider myself lucky that I don’t have to sing to you to distract you.”

I chuckled. “I didn’t know that was an option. I definitely would have asked for that level of service.”

Beck’s smile grew as he searched out the cream and took the cap off. “I only offer it when the patient passes out at the sight of blood.” His eyes shifted to mine for a brief moment before he squirted some of the cream into my palm. “Since that would make you the worst paramedic ever, I’m going to assume you don’t have that problem.”

Beck began gently rubbing the cream over the injury.

“So, who was the recipient of your excellent bedside manner?” I asked, more to distract myself from how badly I wanted to reach out and run my fingers through Beck’s shaggy hair as he bent over my hand. It would be so easy to tug his head up and seal my mouth over his.

“My little sister. She was constantly scraping her knees and hands when she was little…always in such a hurry to get places.”

“How old is she now?” I asked.

“Almost twelve.”

“Do you have any other siblings?”

“Toby. He just turned fifteen. My fathers are freaking out because he’s getting his learner’s permit soon.”

“Fathers?” I asked. “With an s?”

I remembered Luke and Quinn both mentioning Beck had two fathers, but I hadn’t asked for details at the time.

Beck nodded. “My parents are gay. I guess technically I have three fathers, but I don’t think much about my real dad anymore.”

“You’re adopted?”

Another nod. Only this time Beck seemed a little tenser. “Rafe and Cade Barretti adopted me and my brother and sister when I was thirteen. We were their foster kids before that.”

“They sound like amazing men,” I said. “I still want to see those pictures of your family.”

Beck paused and looked up at me before finally saying, “Okay. But it’ll need to wait till we have more time since my hour lunch break won’t even get us halfway through the pictures.”

Beck smirked and I felt my insides light up. I wanted to touch him so badly that I shook with it. Luckily, Beck didn’t seem to notice as he searched out a gauze pad.

“What about your family?” Beck asked.

While I preferred to talk about his, I knew I needed to give something if I wanted to get something back. “It’s big, but mostly because there are lots of cousins. My uncles and aunts have been busy over the years.”

“What about your parents? Do you have any brothers or sister?”

I felt pain bloom in my chest. “A brother,” I finally managed to get out.

“Older or younger?” Beck asked as he tore the packaging open and pulled the gauze out.

“Older…by five minutes.”

Beck’s eyes lifted to mine. “You’re a twin?”

I nodded.

“Identical or fraternal?”

“Identical.”

Beck smiled. “Wow…two of you. That’s…”
