Donny gave her an apologetic smile, but she waved him off.

On the day of the barbecue, Andrea couldn’t decide what to wear even though Donny would be there to pick her up within the next half hour. She’d spent most of the time since she woke contemplating her outfit and overall appearance. She didn’t want to overdress, but at the same time, she didn’t want to be underdressed. She’d asked him what the dress code for the cookout was, but he had simply told her to dress comfortably.

“How comfortable?” she’d asked.

“I’m not sure how to answer that,” he replied, giving her a confused look.

She looked down at the white sleeveless sundress with floral prints, the black denim pants and white blouse ensemble, and the patterned maxi dress, which confused her all the more. She was clearly undecided. Maybe she should just wear a simple T-shirt and some shorts, she thought.

“Drea, what are you doing? Your date will be here any minute,” Cora asked as she stepped into her room.

She released a defeated exhale. “I can’t decide what to wear,” she admitted. “And he’s not my date— we’re not going on a date. He’s just escorting me to the cookout where all the firefighters will be,” she rationalized.

Cora raised a skeptical brow. “If you say so…”

Andrea sighed, exasperated by her sister’s efforts to play matchmaker.

“Think whatever you like. This is not a date,” she finished with finality. “Now, can you help me choose an outfit before Donny gets here?” she pleaded.

Cora smirked before coming to stand over her clothing selection.

“Wear the sundress,” she suggested. “You can never go wrong with that.”

Andrea quickly stepped into the outfit. She chose to wear her hair down in loose curls, so all she had left to do was spritz some of her vanilla-scented body spray at her neck and behind her ears and apply some gloss to her lips. She then stepped into her low-heeled, thong sandals.

“You look beautiful, Sis,” Cora complimented. “If you were going to prom, I would have had to snap a picture of you and your date.”

“Cora,” Andrea snapped in warning.

She held up her hands in surrender. Just then, they heard the doorbell. Grabbing her purse, Andrea made her way downstairs, with Cora following closely behind.

“Well, hello there,” Donny said with a charming smile as soon as the door opened.

“Hi,” she returned. She was surprised at how breathy her voice sounded.

“Hi, I’m Cora, Drea’s sister,” she greeted, holding her hand out.

“A pleasure to meet you,” he replied, accepting the hand Cora held out to him.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you too, Donny,” Cora returned. “This is nice. Andrea met my friend that I made when I just moved here, and now, I’m meeting her new friend,” Cora stated cryptically.

Donny gave her a puzzled look, but Andrea stepped in front of her sister, preventing her from embarrassing her.

“Let’s go.” Hooking her arm under his, she steered him off the porch and toward his car.

“Bye Drea, bye Donnie. Have fun.”

Andrea rolled her eyes at her sister’s mischief while Donny chuckled in amusement.

“Your sister is something else,” Donny spoke as they drove off the property.

“She’s something all right,” she seethed.

“I can tell that she really loves you, though.”

Andrea looked over at him with a smile. “I know.”

When they arrived at Captain Braun’s house, Andrea felt her palms sweating from anxiety.
