Once all the commotion settled down, the sisters left the house to go visit the flower garden.

“I think we should do something for Mom’s birthday, maybe keep the tradition Dad started,” Andrea suggested to her sisters.

“That’s a great idea,” Cora responded, and Josephine nodded in agreement.

“I thought we could all choose to plant a different species of rose. If we do it now, I think they would bloom in time to surprise her,” she continued to say.

The sisters agreed before sitting on the raised platform.

“Guys, I have something to share with you, but I don’t know where to begin.”

Andrea and Cora looked at their sister in concern.

“It is about the accident…” Josephine paused.

She breathed in deeply before continuing.

“I suspected Nicholas wasn’t himself during the accident,” she said slowly.

“What do you mean?” Cora asked as Andrea looked at her sister, perplexed.

“I’m saying that… oh, it doesn’t matter now.” Josephine averted her eyes, but her sisters could see that what she was about to say was something possibly earth-shattering.

“Jo, I’m sure it’s not nothing if you brought it up,” Cora spoke softly.

Josephine looked back at her sisters with tears in her eyes. “I just feel so ashamed,” she sobbed.

They rushed to her side, hugging her closely.

“You don’t have to talk about it now, Jo. Just know that we’re here when you’re ready,” Cora soothed her.

Josephine gave her a grateful smile, squeezing the hand on her cheek.

They decided to change the subject to talk about their plans for their mother’s birthday some more instead of focusing on more heartache.

“Let’s go for a ride on Dad’s old boat,” Josephine suggested.

“You mean theSilver Bullet,” Cora replied.

“He renamed the boat?”

“Yeah, Jo, he did,” Andrea confirmed.

Josephine put her hand to her mouth as a wave of sadness and happiness washed over her at the same time.

The sisters gave her a knowing look as they had all felt the same way.

After donning swimsuits under their clothes, they made their way down to the dock and boarded the boat.

Josephine ran her hand lovingly over the words painted on the boat, and Cora and Drea looked on in understanding.

“Great going, Dad,” she threw into the wind.

Andrea, who stood at the wheel, took the boat out. She brought it back to the south side of the Camano Islands so that they could enjoy the alcove in privacy. The sisters enjoyed the magnificent view of the mountain ranges in the background of the blue-green waters as the boat seamlessly sliced through the waves.

Andrea brought the boat to a stop and began mooring it about one mile away from the alcove.

“God, I’ve missed this,” Josephine expressed as she sat with her legs dangling from the side of the boat as she looked out across the expanse of the ocean.
