‘I suppose you’re right.’ She hesitated. ‘Dad…?’

‘Hmm?’

‘Do you think Aunt Nelly is OK?’

‘What do you mean? You saw her today, didn’t you?’

Seren nodded. ‘Yes, that’s why I’m asking. She seemed… oh, I don’t know… not quite with it.’

‘In what way?’ Patrick stopped eating and put his knife and fork down. Seren could see worry creeping across his face.

‘We were discussing who had the idea for the travelling gift shop, when she said something strange.’

‘Like what? Come on, Seren, this is like pulling teeth.’

‘She said, “You might as well have it now as when I’m gone”. What do you think she meant by that?’

Patrick picked his cutlery up once more and stabbed a piece of pasta with his fork. ‘No idea,’ he replied, ‘but it doesn’t sound like anything to get your knickers in a twist about.’

‘It’s not just that – she keeps accusing the other residents of stealing her walker.’

‘Yeah, I know.’ Her dad sniggered. ‘She does it on purpose to wind them up.’

‘Shetoldyou that?’

‘Yep.’

‘So you don’t think there’s anything to worry about?’

‘Nope.’

‘Phew.’

Patrick pointed his fork at her. ‘You’ve got enough to worry about, without looking for additional problems. Your Aunt Nelly has still got all her marbles. I wish she’d give a couple of them to me – I’d forget my head if it wasn’t screwed on.’

‘I don’t think you’re the only one,’ Seren said, remembering she still needed to phone Tobias tomorrow about the invoice. It was nearly three weeks since she’d picked the van up from T&M Conversions and she was still no nearer to paying her debt.

Briefly she considered the possibility of it being a ploy to get her to go to the garage so he could ask her out again, because she had a feeling he might be unused to women turning him down and that she might be a bit of a novelty for that reason alone. Maybe she’d leave it a week or so – he might do his paperwork at set times of the month – although she did think it was a rather slapdash way to do business, she guessed he must be busy enough that he wasn’t living hand to mouth.

She’d give him a ring anyway, just to jog his memory. Although she wondered if Daniel had managed to have a word with Tobias after she’d mentioned it to him.

Daniel… her insides tingled as she thought about their date tomorrow night.

She couldn’t wait! This time, she was determined to have a proper kiss, and she had a feeling it was going to be toe-curlingly wonderful.
