Edwin wasn’t finished. ‘That’s not all,’ he said. ‘It didn’t work out between Gina and her ex. Gina begged Daniel to take her back, but Daniel couldn’t trust her again, so he refused. She used Amelia to try to get to him. Amelia was devastated at him leaving, you see…’

Seren choked back a sob. ‘Poor Daniel.’ Tears gathered in the corner of her eyes and trickled down her cheeks. Even Nelly’s eyes were full.

‘Daniel vowed to never again get involved with a woman who had children, because he didn’t want another child to go through what Amelia had gone through.’ Edwin paused, then continued, ‘He didn’t want his heart broken all over again, either. He loved that child as though she was his own, you see.’

Seren saw.

She understood where he was coming from, and what he must have thought when he was informed she had a child. But what she couldn’t understand was why he hadn’t spoken to her about it. He could have asked her outright about Freya and she would have told him the little girl wasn’t hers. It would have saved them both a great deal of pain.

Unless…

…he wasn’t at all upset about their breakup.

Slowly Seren rose to her feet and picked up her coat. ‘Thank you for telling me,’ she said. ‘I appreciate it, but it doesn’t make any difference. Next time you see him, please tell him I wish him well in his new job.’

She managed to walk away with her head high and fought not to break down again; whether or not she had a child was irrelevant – Daniel had a new life and there was no room in it for her.
