“There are just two suitcases, a couple of bags. Not much else,” said Brooke. In going through her wardrobe, she’d realized there were few things she thought suitable—several thrift-store items that were fine for work but not many beach-type pieces of clothing. Such was her life.

Brooke followed the others up the stairs, soaking in the peace that began to settle around her. Here, she had no worries; she could relax.

At the door to her bedroom, an unbidden sting of tears made her blink rapidly. The room’s pale purple walls seemed to embrace her with memories of happy times spent with Gran and her cousins.

“All we need is for Livy to arrive,” Brooke said.

Gran came up to her and wrapped an arm around her. “Livy should get here tomorrow.”

“Great, huh?” said Charlie. “The Three Mouseketeers back together again.”

Brooke laughed. When they were much younger, Gran had talked about the original Mouseketeers, and then they’d watched reruns of the later shows for a while during summer trips. Her cousin Livy imagined herself singing and dancing. However, what Livy had in enthusiasm, she lacked in musical ability. But the cookies she baked even back then? The best. Even now, a box of sweets baked by her was a favorite gift at Christmas.

“I can’t wait to see her and have the three of us together again,” said Brooke. “It’s been way too long.”

“Amen,” said Gran. “We’re going to have an incredible time.” Her smile wavered, and Brooke wondered what was behind the invitation to spend time here together.
