CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

ELLIE

Ellie sat in the reading room of the inn they were staying at in the English countryside and gazed at Liz’s words on her computer screen with shock.

Charlie had saved Shane’s life in a near-drowning incident. When pressed, Charlotte had thanked Gran for making sure she and her cousins knew how to swim and had taken lifesaving courses.

“That dear, dear girl,” whispered Ellie, dabbing at her eyes with a tissue before focusing on the screen once more.

“Charlie and Austin are tending to Shane, making sure he gets to rest for the next few days. It’s so inspiring to see Charlie’s concern. You and I have often talked about what a wonderful pair they’d make. I’m not sure, but maybe our dreams about them could come true. Only time will tell. But if the sparks between them ever burst into flame, it’ll be undeniable. I’m rooting for that to happen, as I’m sure you are too.”

Ellie let out a long sigh. Life was so tenuous. They had dreams for all their grandchildren. To think they’d almost lost Shane was horrifying.

She turned back to the screen and read about the wi-fi upgrades Austin was putting in, the way Skye and Brooke had taken to one another, and the dates Livy was going on. For a moment, she longed to go home.

John came into the room. “Ready to go?”

She smiled at his enthusiasm. “In a second. I’ll catch you up on the family news as we travel.”

This trip with John was turning out very well. Most of the time, they felt like a young couple on their honeymoon, eager to see and do everything. Other times, they simply relaxed.
