“Yeah. How are you doing?” Jed asked him.

He glanced at Charlotte and then let out a long breath. “Apparently, this bang on the head did more damage than we thought. But I’ll be fine. I’ve agreed to take it easy for a few more days. But I’ll be back in the office as soon as I can. Anything I should know about?”

Jed shook his head. “Everything’s under control. No more business talk until you come back. Sarita would have my neck if she knew I’d said even this much to you.”

Shane laughed. “Sarita runs the show. I get it.”

They grinned at each other before Jed accepted the napkin, knife, and fork Charlotte handed him. “Livy says you’re taking her to a special place tomorrow.”

Jed face lit with excitement. “There’s a Spanish restaurant on St. Armand’s Circle in Sarasota that I think she’d like. Thought we could make a day of it, maybe have dinner there and then head back to St. Pete Beach to one of my favorite bars.”

“Sounds like a lot of yummy food,” Charlotte said.

His lips curved into another happy smile. “It’s fun to be with someone who likes to eat, try new things.” His expression grew serious. “I like her a lot.”

He gave her a questioning look, but Charlotte didn’t respond. She wasn’t going to speak for Livy. They’d have to work things out for themselves.

“Have a beer,” said Shane, handing Jed a cold can.

“Nice to see you, Jed. I’m going to leave you two alone and get back to my book,” Charlotte said.

Jed gave her a little salute. “Thanks for taking such good care of my buddy.”

Charlotte and Shane exchanged amused glances. They both understood Shane would do only so much relaxing.

Later, after Jed had gone and Charlotte said goodnight to Shane, she lay in bed thinking about the unlikely events of the past two days. Spilling her guts to Shane and having him tell her things he hadn’t told others had brought them a lot closer as friends. This is what they both needed. But, was this what they really wanted?
