Once we’re in the office I close the door and tell him to take a seat.“Shepp, I want to send you to my European headquarters to train under my divisional manager. You will start your training here and once you are ready you will go to Europe. Once you have learned that business you will come back here and finish your training with me.”

“Do you want me to run a hotel for you?”

“No, I want you to run all the hotels, and resorts. I am going to train you to take over running my company, the whole thing.”

“No! I mean I just graduated from college, all I have is a BS!”

“I am a college dropout, Shepp, I don’t even have an Associate’s Degree – let alone a Bachelor’s Degree. I just had a drive and good instincts and I see that with you and the work you are doing at the coffee shop, and even the internship you did at Gideon Properties. If you are willing to work hard and learn everything you can from the janitor’s job to the divisional manager's job and trust your instinct you will do a phenomenal job.”

He just sits there looking at me like I have lost my mind. Even though this seems out of the blue, I’ve watched Shepp since I met Savannah. He began working at a retail store as an associate and was quickly promoted to store manager. The store they placed him at as manager was the worst in the district, but within six months Shepp turned it around to become one of the top three stores in the company. He also has been managing his mother’s writing career and not only helped her become a bestselling author on one list but two of the top lists an author can be on. He has doubled the revenue for the coffee shop and is currently helping Joseph expand and possibly franchise the shop. He has a knack for business, and I want to help cultivate it.

“Well, what do you say?” I ask him.

“I’d be honored,” he says.

“Well, let’s get to work, first let's discuss your salary and hiring package.” We go over the package that includes A print copy of the employee handbook, HR forms, like an employment contract, benefits forms, and confidentiality agreements. He also gets his technology package that includes a state-of-the-art computer, plus an at-home computer system, his work cell, and business credit cards. His keys, key cards, parking permit, and ID. I also set up a travel stipend that will cover his accommodations if he does not wish to stay at one of the hotels, food, and clothing on top of his salary. He has a stipend for office supplies for both his mobile and home office. Shepp went from a college graduate to a CEO in training making six figures in a matter of days. Once you are trained you can decide which hotel will be your base hotel, but you will also be required to travel to all the properties as well.

When we look up hours have gone by, and we are both starving. We decide to have lunch at the coffee shop since they serve light lunch items, and we still have a lot to go over and didn’t want to eat anything too heavy. We order, grab our food, and get a table in the back corner of the shop. We talk specifics while eating.

“I figure you can start training here until you are ready to go to Europe. You will be at my very first hotel and Victor will be training you. It will probably take a few years before you are truly going to be ready to run the company, but I will still be here, just in the background. I have a project for you, I want to sell off a few hotels and resorts. I want you to go through the properties, financial records, and future projections to ascertain which hotels and resorts we should let go of. When we get back to the office, I will show you how to log in and access the necessary records.”

I can tell Shepp is excited to do this project and it will also tell me how much training he really needs. I have already spoken to my finance team and gone through the reports, but I want to see if Shepp comes to the same conclusion as me. We drop the shop talk and just enjoy our lunch until I hear the voice I have been dreaming of.

“Can I join you?” Lennox says.
