Chapter Eleven

Tadeo

Sawyer grabbed my arm and towed me down the hall and into our room. He closed the door behind us and leaned into it. “She’s our mate.”

I studied him. “And why do you say this?”

“Don’t you feel it? The desire for a child was never a big deal, I mean, we always knew we would love to be parents, but recently the topic comes up every day at some point, as if we can’t let it go, can’t stop thinking about it.”

“Maybe we should stop doing that,” I pointed out. “Maybe we’ve just been torturing ourselves.”

“Did you hear her story? When she spoke of the Goddess, of being guided through the brambles and the snow helping hold back the followers in the pass, she asked the Lady to help her fulfill her will.”

“I believe her exact words were, ‘Please, Lady, if you have a mate for me, lead me to him now. If I remain unmated, they will find me and drag me back. Please let me fulfill your will.’”

“Tadeo, you remembered that word for word. You must agree with me that there’s something to it. Did the Lady lead her to us?”

“I don’t know. But if we’re going to have a discussion about this, don’t you think all parties involved should have input?”

“I don’t know about you two, but I think that would be right.” Analise walked into our bedroom without invitation. “If you are discussing me, I would like to be part of the talk. I’ve had enough of other people making decisions for me lately.”

“Valid point.” Sawyer waved her in. “Have a seat. I want to ask you both something. You sit, too, Tadeo.”

We sat side by side on the bed with at least three feet between us, but I could feel her as if we touched. I hadn’t had this kind of awareness of anyone since I met Sawyer. No one, male or female. I sidled another foot away. “Okay, mate, what did you want to say?”

“Analise asked the Lady to lead her to a mate if she was to have one. What if her fated mate is two?”

“Two?” Her voice squeaked. “Not everyone gets a mate, at all, at least not a true mate. How could one person get two?”

She was so young. So innocent. And she’d nearly had her life ruined by her own father who would place her in harm’s way for… “Analise, you said the mating was for an alliance between packs.” I reached for her hand again, unable to help myself. “This would be to create a family, and I believe my mate is right. You prayed to be led to your mate and you had extraordinary help to get here. I think the Lady sent you to us.”

“You’re both very handsome, but you have each other already. Do you even like me?” She had no confidence at all, the poor thing. “Because my offer still stands. You’ll have a family, and I will have my freedom.”

Sawyer knelt in front of her. “Analise, I’m attracted to you. And that doesn’t happen with mated wolves. At least not honorable ones, except under the rarest circumstances. We’ve always wanted a baby but until recently, it’s not been a big deal. Suddenly we can’t have a conversation without the topic coming up. And then, you pray to be led to your mate, and you end up here.” I took her other hand. “You said yourself that if you remain unmated, you’ll be dragged back to the mating you don’t want. We’re offering you the alpha female role in our pack.” He looked at me. “At least, I think we are.”

“We are.” I petted the back of her hand, loving the silk of her skin.

“Y-you can’t mean it. As you said, you just met me. H-how can you be so sure?”
