Chapter Thirteen

Sawyer

“I hoped she’d come to bed with us,” I said, curled up with my mate spooning me. “Do you think she’s going to reject us?”

“I don’t know.” Tadeo nuzzled my shoulder. “It’s her decision.”

“What do we do if she doesn’t want to be our mate?” Frustration soared within me at the thought of not having something I’d never known I wanted. And it wasn’t the baby. “I mean, she is our mate. Doesn’t she know?”

“No idea. Maybe she needs some time. Or maybe it’s too much for her and we’ll just have to find a way to keep her safe. Even if it means sending her to a pack farther east.”

“Whatever she needs,” I agreed. “Our mate comes first.”

“Even if she doesn’t recognize that it’s not just an ordinary mating but one set up by the gods.”

A rustle in the darkness caught my attention. “May I come in?”

Tadeo rolled away from me, leaving a space in the middle. We did that naturally, I think, as if we needed to place her in the middle of our already established bond. “Join us,” he said in that tone of command that always gave me a chill. “Come get warm.”

Despite the darkness, my shifter vision allowed me to see enough to watch her crawling up the bed from the foot to settle in the space we left for her. I reached down and rearranged the covers over all of us.

“You’re both naked,” she murmured. “I feel overdressed.”

“Feel free to take off all those extra clothes,” Tadeo told her. “But it’s entirely up to you. I’m glad you’re here.”

“Me, too,” I added, wanting to say more but following Tadeo’s lead. She was like a skittish kitten who needed to have time to adjust with nobody moving too fast and scaring her back to the couch. Still, we both lay on our sides facing her, as if we’d planned it. “Were you cold out there? The fire is probably getting low.”

“A little and the storm is getting loud. This side of the house is quieter.”

“I’m trying not to be hurt that you’re only here because it’s less noisy,” Tadeo said. He rested a hand on her belly. “Are you here just to sleep?”

“I think so. No. I don’t know.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “Is that weird?”

“No.” I stroked her soft blonde curls, loving the silk of them under my palm. “None of us has been in this situation before, so we’re learning as we go. Right?”

Her head bobbed. “As long as you two are okay with my going slow.”

Tadeo grazed her cheek with his fingertips. “As slow as you like. Does this mean you’re leaning toward accepting the mating with us?”

“What woman wouldn’t? You two are wolf gods, and most likely, the mates granted me by the Goddess. I mean, I’d be an ungrateful fool to walk away.”

Tadeo let her finish then said, “But?”

“You heard that, huh? Okay, but I want to know that it’s my decision and not just fate tumbling me into place. Does that sound at all logical?”

He chuckled. “I’m still enjoying being called a wolf god.”

“Me, too,” I put in, “and I do understand what you’re saying. When we met, the hand of fate was there as well. Tadeo came a long way to kill me.”

“He what?” She snuggled down between us and pulled the covers up high, but in doing so uncrossed her arms from her chest. I took that as a good sign.

“He challenged me. It’s a long story, and one we’ll be glad to share with you one day, but for tonight, I’d like to kiss you.” I held my breath waiting for her reply.

She tipped her face up to me. “I’d like that, too.”

Slowly, she’d asked for slowly, and I did my very best to give her that. I brushed my lips over hers.
