Chapter Eighteen

Every few months, wedid a Cosplay Saturday theme in the café. The staff wore costumes, and we encouraged the customers to do the same.

It was a huge business day, especially since a few of our staff liked school uniforms—the men and the women—and fans would come just for the sexy-cuteness of those outfits. People would also stop by to see the spectacle, then end up staying for coffee, sweets, and sometimes gaming time.

I never dressed up. I played theI’m the boss, I don’t have tocard.

But today, I felt good. There were a lot of days like recently, but after talking to Owen last night, I was light as air.

I finished the morning’s baking, including the extra for anticipated business, then headed upstairs to change. I pulled the plaid skirt from the back of my closet, paired it with black Mary Janes, white knee-highs, and a button-down white shirt. The finishing touch was twin braids.

As I descended the back stairs, Anne’s, “Holy hotness, gorgeous,” greeted me.

“Hey, you made it.” I skipped down the last few steps to greet her.DamnI felt good.

Anne gave me a noisy kiss on the cheek. “Glad I didn’t miss it.”

I stepped back to look her over. “Someone’s out of costume.”

“No, I’m not.” She put her arms out and twirled. “I’m inconspicuous extra number seventy-two.”

“Very specific. Why not sixty-nine?”

Anne snorted. “Because once you realize the flaws with actually doing that, the joke isn’t as funny.”

“You didn’t think of it.”

She grinned. “I didn’t think of it. Forget the skirt, I love this mood on you. These guys are really good for you. When do I get to meet them?”

Heat flooded my cheeks thinking about them. “They really are incredible. Owen will be back soon.”

“So... give you two weeks straight of fucking, and you might be able to make time for me?” Anne teased.

“It’s not...”that kind of relationship. But last night it became that with Owen, and while Kingston and I hadn’t slept together again, we were pushing the boundaries of what could be calledno sex. A teensy bit of me said I should be concerned about that, but I believed him when he told me why he was holding back. “I’m sure we’ll need a break long before two weeks is up, to eat and stuff.”

“Uh-huh.”

Anne stuck around to help with the day’s rush. Our other friends filtered in and out as they were able. The event was a bigger success than we’d ever had. A few more of these, and I wouldn’t be worrying so much about paying the bills.

My friends took off as the crowds dwindled. My staff and I were in the process of gently shooing people out the door when a pair of arms wrapped around my waist.

“I never would have skipped class if you’d been there,” Kingston murmured, before nibbling on my earlobe.

I leaned back into him. This felt so good. So right. “You skipped class? You scoundrel.”
