Page 82 of Asking For It

“I agree.” Besides, I had a surprise still—one I suspected Lyn would be okay with—that carried the weight of a second ring nestled away in my luggage.

Lyn’s sigh was exaggerated. “All right. Let’s go back, so I can find out what this big not-surprise is that you’re proposing.”

I shook my head at her word choice, but mostly because I didn’t think of it first.

We’d opted to rent a more traditional guest house rather than a hotel room. When we stepped inside, Lyn’s mouth fell open. “Wow.” Her voice was soft as she took it all in.

It was as beautiful in person as online, but I was more interested in watching her as she explored every room, through sliding doors, to discover the futon in the bedroom, her attention lingering on stunning inked artwork.

While she and Kingston explored, I took the excuse to slip a box with two rings into my pocket.

“It’s amazing.” Lyn finally looked at me.

I couldn’t see anything else. “Yeah, you are.”

Pink flushed her cheeks. I loved that look on her. I loved any look on her.

Lyn ducked her head. “If you’re not careful, I might start to like surprises.”

“You’re going to love this one. I promise.” I grasped her fingers and tugged her closer.

“This one’s not really a surprise, though.”

If I wasn’t careful, I’d break my stern façade too soon. “Trust me.”

Kingston watched us both with a sexy smirk that said he had answers no one else did. Time to prove him wrong. I cupped his cheek and held his gaze. The warmth and affection that looked back was tinged with a hint of shock, and took my breath away.

“Every day, I’m grateful I met you,” I said to Kingston. “It took me longer than I should have to figure it out, but I’ve loved you for years. You’re my opposite. The perfect partner in everything. My best friend.”

“And I keep you from being wound too tight.” His playful retort caught.

I smiled. “And that.” I turned to Lyn, drawing her fingers up to kiss the tips. “And you. You’re sunshine, you’re warmth, you’re so much I need that I never knew I was missing. You compliment both of us. I can’t imagine not knowing you. Not having you in my life—our lives. Because I can’t imagine there not being anusthat involves you, me, and Kingston.”

This wasn’t what I’d planned to say, but as happened frequently, I had to adapt when one of them turned big, adoring eyes on me. I had to let go of both of them to tug the rings free, but it wasn’t enough time to regather my thoughts.

“I don’t care what we call what we have, as long as there’s a promise of forever. I want—need—you both in my life.” I opened the box.

Lyn clapped and squealed with delight. “Yes. That’s what I’m supposed to say, right? Becauseyes. Always yes.”

“You sneaky bastard,” Kingston said. “Me too.”

I raised an eyebrow. “You have to say it.”

“Yes.” His smirk was back.

I slipped Lyn’s ring on her finger first. The bands were both simple, black titanium. “Anne helped me size it. We can pick something more vibrant if you want.”

“I don’t want. It’s perfect.” Lyn threw her arms around my neck and kissed me hard. Her body molded to mine, the perfect amount of soft and yielding mixed with insistence. Just like her.

When Kingston cleared his throat, I let Lyn go and turned to him. “Feeling left out?” I teased.

“I want a ring too.” He held out his left hand, ring finger isolated.

I slipped his band into place, dropped the box, and gripped the back of his neck, holding him captive.

His grunt of surprise was intoxicating. I crushed my mouth to his and dove my tongue past his lips to dance and tease around his tongue. Sparks practically sizzled from us. I was so glad I’d stopped denying what this was.

When I finally let Kingston go, he stood there for a moment, eyes half shut and mouth half open. He shook his head and turned to Lyn. “Me too. I already gave my pretty speech. But you, me, all of us. Partners in everything?”
