“Are you all right?” Megan asked. “You sound… off.”

I climbed into my truck and started the engine. The phone went on speaker. “I need to talk to you. I need to tell you…” words I didn’t have.

“About Landon. About how you feel about him.”

“Yeah.”

“Me too.”

I wasn’t surprised to hear her say it, but I was more relieved than I expected. Shouldn’t I be jealous? All these years, watching her with other men and hating it. Now she wanted to add one more to our lives… But so did I. “So we are on the same page.”

“You know what, I’m not going to assume that,” Megan said.

“Okay…?” I loved this new spark in her, because it was still Megan, but she was more certain with her words. More deliberate.

She sighed. “I really wanted to do this face to face with you.”

“Me too, but you know how I feel. Since you don’t want to make assumptions about what I’m saying, I love you. You own my heart.”

“Not all of it.” Her voice was sweet. Sympathetic. Hopeful?

The words still weren’t there for me. “Are you heading out?”

“I’m wrapping a few things up, but soon. Don’t ignore what I just said.”

“I’m not.”

“And…?” Megan asked.

This was hard. As hard as watching her get engaged to other men. As hard as seeing her in a dress and knowing she wasn’t marrying me. “I want Landon in my life long term, and I think—I hope, I pray to anyone listening—that you feel the same.” Getting the words out, forcing the feelings to manifest, was both a huge relief and a new weight. Would she agree? Would he?

Megan gave a soft laugh. “Me too. I do.”

“That’s not when you’re supposed to sayI do,” I teased.

“But isn’t it?”

She had me there. “That’s not the only reason I need to talk to him,” I said. “But yes, you and I are on the same page. I still love you as much as I always have. More. More and more every day. But what I feel for him…”

“It’s different. Without him…”

“We’re Peanut M&Ms without the peanut.” I finished the thought.

She laughed. “I’m pretty sure you’re the nut.”

Probably. This all felt insane. “I’m the hard candy shell.”

“Melts in my mouth…”

“This has gone off course.” Not that I minded at all.

There was that laugh again. Intoxicating. Sweet. “I’ll be there as soon as I can,” Megan said. “Do what you need to make him hear you—us—out.”

“Whatever happens next, you and I are in this together. And with a little luck…”

“So is Landon.” Megan and I really did fit together.

I reached Landon’s a short while later, and hammered on the door with the side of my fist.
