“The new assembly the people elected has just passed the first law you put forth. They agreed unanimously to ban the trials and reaping for sport, money, and prestige.”

“That’s the best news I’ve heard in a while,” I say, falling against his chest.

“Mmm, second best.”

I step back to gaze into his eyes. “What do you mean?”

A sly smile dances on his full lips. “Your scent has changed.”

“My scent… what? Oh, gods.” My mouth falls open as all the ending of all those monster novels occurs to me.

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

“Do you know whose it is?”

Rhygel shrugs. “Does it matter?”

No. No, it doesn’t. Because the five of us will loveourlittle one with all of our hearts.

And so will his Grandma Hope.

We might have to work on Grandpa Tom, though.

“Come.” Rhygel takes me by the wrist, leading me out of the dormitory. “I want some alone time with you,” he says, sliding an arm under my knees and one around my back.

My arms wrap around his neck as he takes off into the air, chasing the amber light of this plane and the stars that lie beyond.

We race into the clouds, like so many demon lovers before us and so many yet to come. And I know, beyond all shadows of doubt, that thisismy happily ever after.
