I knew Malphas had them, but I didn’t expect them all to.

But what’s more concerning is that I knew any of this at all. And even though Typhon isn’t concerned, I have questions.

Do you think I should look into this? Try to figure it out more?

It’s entirely up to you, Lily. As long as it doesn’t interfere with reaping, I have no say on what you do with your free time.

I know. I thought maybe you’d have some insight, though. Maybe you could tell me who to talk to?

I’d suggest going to whatever witch made you that amulet that Barbas came home crying about.

Oh god. Had I actually hurt Barbas badly? He wasn’t really crying, was he?

No. I exaggerated for the effect, hoping to get another laugh from you.

Oh. Well, that’s good to know. But something else Typhon said sat in the back of my brain, irking me. The bit about not interfering with the reaping.

Did getting my job back mess up their plans?

I’m not available to reap whenever they are. And even though I’d meant for this job to be a big show of support with the key to winning the trial, I think I’d actually screwed it up.

You know, I have to work to live, right? I mean, I need a job so I can pay my bills and eat.

I’m aware of how commerce is conducted here, yes.

Well, even still, I’m sorry if getting my job back messed up your reaping plans.

It’s more your stamina I’m concerned about. If you’re spending all day here and reaping at night, when will you have time to sleep?

I’ll figure it out, Typhon.

I have no doubt you will. In fact, I was the one who first suspected you were capable of far more than most hosts.

Is that so?

It is. It took a brawl, but I convinced Rhygel of it.

Hm. I guess that’s why you’re second-in-command.

We spoke more about how difficult working with other demons could be and I kept plodding along with my new client info, and soon enough, my workday was over.

Do you need to eat?

I probably should before we get started. I’ll just grab something quick on the way home. Then I can change and we can head out. Sound good?

Sounds good.

Unlike the others, Typhon’s emotions don’t flow into me. I don’t mean they’re more subtle like Rhygel’s. I feel absolutely nothing from Typhon.

I find it uncomfortable, not knowing exactly how he’s feeling. I’d come to rely on it when dealing with the others.

But with Typhon, I have no clue if he’s as amiable about my plan as he sounds or not.

I stop at the convenience store close to the condo. The guy at the counter gives me a double take, then a wary glance, and for a moment, I fear my demon is showing.

“Hey, back for more wings?” he asks carefully.

“Oh, no. Not today. Just a quick sandwich,” I say and grab the freshest looking one, an apple, and an energy drink, and head to the counter to pay.
