“Well, you’re not a witch. We’re born, and you’d know it if you were. Vampires are born as well, though some are made, and again, you’d know it. Same with werewolves, and fae, djinn, and dragon shifters.

Yeah, OK, so werewolves are a thing. Right. And I wasn’t even going to think about all the other things she just named.

“So, you’re saying I’m not anything you know of. Is that it?”

Claudia nods. “I’m afraid so.” She gazes behind me, out the window of her granny-chic sitting room. “Actually, you know what? Let me do some research and get back to you.”

“You have an idea?”

“I might, but I want to be sure.”

“OK, just don’t forget.”

Claudia smiles at me, and for once, I don’t feel the need to back away. “I don’t forget anything.”

Lily, is it OK if I come back?

I ask Claudia if she’s comfortable with that.

“Let’s keep it just us for now,” she says, and I relay the message to Mal.

“So, I’m curious.” Claudia leans forward, excitement barely contained in her features. “What’s it like having sex with demons.”

“What? I—I’m not…” Where the hell is this coming from?

Claudia is visibly surprised. “You aren’t? I thought—well, that is, it’s common knowledge among my kind that the only way to keep control of a demon is to, well, allow them to pleasure you.”

My mouth falls open and I shock myself by actually having a quick retort. “Well, that might be what your kind has to do, but it’s not what I do.” I stand, wrapping my arms around my middle and head to the door. “Do you research and get back to me please,” I say and leave.

What the fuck!

How absolutely rude!

Are you OK, Lily?Malphas asks as he descends into my head.

I shudder with the feeling of it, the rightness of having another in my head, and slide into the driver’s seat, peeling wheels to get out of here as fast as possible.

“I’m most definitely not alright!” I yell out loud to no one.

What did she say?

“She asked… She wanted to know if—”Arg! She wanted to know what it was like having sex with demons! I mean, really, as if that was even an option!

Malphas goes quiet.

It’s not an option, right?

Nothing. Not a peep from him.

Damnit, Mal. Now’s not the time to be tight-lipped.

I apologize, Lily. I’m simply processing your word choice.

My word choice? What does that mean?

A dark laugh fills my head.I simply noticed what you didn’t say.

Make your point, demon!I say, taking my foot off the gas as I finally notice how fast I’m going.
