Why does it look just like my building?

Malphas takes his turn explaining.Because that’s how the demon plane works. It’s the mirror world to yours.

“Holy shit. Holy shit!” It’s all I can muster.

“By George, I think she’s got it,” Eden says and high-fives Claudia.

“I didn’t become something any of you supes needed. I became what the hordes of demons living in the demon version of my building needed.”

“Bingo,” Eden says.

Claudia leans forward, taking my hands. “And they needed you badly enough that they circumvented all the usual ways this works. So listen to me well, demon slayer. There’s never been anyone like you before. Do you understand? That means there are no rules. You get to write them.”

Chapter31

Lils

Iwalk out of Claudia’s townhouse stunned to silence.

And just like when I thought there might be a chance of hope for my mom, I refuse to think it. Refuse to feel that feeling of relief.

Not until it actually happened.

I climb into my car and head in the opposite direction of the condo.

Where are we going?Mal asks.

I need you two to be quiet while I work this out, OK?

Whatever you need, love. Consider it done,Barbas says as he drifts off to the back of my mind.

Mal’s presence recedes as well and I turn over every word that goth witch said to me, looking for clues, for any hint on how I can be with my demons.

In corpore.

They’ve maintained from the very beginning that I cannot travel to the demon realm. But they also didn’t think it was possible to get ripped into this plane. So…

And I make the rules. So by all accounts, I should simply be able to throw myself into their plane.

But what if Claudia’s wrong? What if therearerules and I have to follow them like everyone else?

What if I figure out how to get myself there only to burn up like the demons I pulled here?

From the back of my mind, Barbas sends me some of his warmth and Mal sends a spark of joy. I calm down just long enough to get where I’m going.

A clothing store.

Ideally, I’d have Michelle with me, but she’s undoubtedly still sleeping off her possession, so I’ll have to find my perfect first-time-in-the-demon-plane dress by myself.

Unfortunately, the closest clothing store is also a high end store and I can’t get the sales associate to leave me alone.

“Can I help you find something in your size, ma’am?” asks the cute mid-twenties worker dressed in only clothes from the store.

“No, thank you, I think I’ve got it.”

“OK, well, I’ll be right here if you need anything.”

I nod and continue perusing the dresses. When I move to the next display, the associate follows me.
