“Wait, you thought I was delusional while here, before you got home?”

She nods. “I was awake well before you noticed. You didn’t say much out loud, but I could tell you were having multiple conversations in your head. That and the lily wreckage added up to, well, an intervention with your parents.”

“OK, right, but you let me drive you home when you thought I was having delusions?”

“Yeah, and I was scared shitless the whole way. But I thought if I said anything I might make you angry, and I was terrified of making the situation worse by accident.”

I can’t help but laugh. “Well, thanks for not sending me to the hospital. One look at my arms and they’d definitely put a psych hold on me.”

“I—I didn’t know about that. But seriously, if you ever want to talk…”

I pull her into a hug. “Thank you, Michelle. I really appreciate that. But I’m pretty sure that part of my life is in the past.”

She pulls away and pins me with a serious stare. “You’re really gonna try going to their side?”

“I am.”

“Well, if you figure all the ins and outs of inter-plane travel, can you send me a hot, rich demon? The human ones just aren’t cutting it anymore.”

That earns her a cackle. “I’ll try.”

And I will. I’ll try to find a hot demon for Michelle. But I’ll leave out the part that there aren’t any rich demons.

Chapter32

Lils

You look fantastic,Barbas says as I stare at myself in the full-length mirror.

“You think so?”

Malphas doesn’t hesitate to agree.Definitely. Typhon and Rhygel won’t be able to keep it in their pants for more than a minute after they see you in this.

I smile at them, at myself, and trace the deep V neckline across the top of my boobs. “And what about you two? Will you be able to resist the urge to have me in this?”

Oh, absolutely not.

No way.

Are you certain you don’t want one of us to travel ahead and prepare the dormitory for you? Or let the others know you’re coming? That’s the second time Barb’s asked that question.

“I’m positive, Barb. I want to surprise them. And I don’t care what your dorm looks like, just that the five of us are in it together.”

Well, I had to be sure. Is there anything we do to help your transition?

“I don’t think I need anything from you two. This is something I need to figure out myself,” I say while unwinding the bandage from my left arm.

In addition to a low neckline and double-slits all the way up to my mid-thighs, the white dress I chose—well, the sales associate chose—has short, capped sleeves that only cover the tops of my shoulders.

I let the bandage flutter to the ground. Those wounds are closed and I’m not hiding who I am anymore.

I let out a long sigh and nod to them in the mirror. “I think I’m ready.”

Let’s do it!Mal cheers.

I can’t wait to meet you in the flesh.

I reach for the mirror, grazing the smooth, cool glass with a fingertip, which seems fitting. Using a mirror—the object I chose to connect with my demons when only voices in my head weren’t enough—as a portal has a nice sort of symmetry. And so when I touch it, the glass morphs into liquid metal, engulfing my finger, then hand, then arm, before swallowing me up.
