I bite my lower lip, trying to keep the whimper trapped in my throat.

Drago notices. Instantly, he’s up and off the bed. It only takes him moments to cross the room, nose open the door, and give every one of the wolves in the guest suite living area a low, threatening growl.

And because of that, whatever’s about to happen next doesn’t.

I get discussing it in the compound. Neutral ground. But right next to where I’m trying to…

Drago unleashes another growl, followed by a sharp bark.

“Maybe we should discuss this downstairs,” Jonah suggests.

“Good call,” Jaxson agrees.

Drago spins around, kicks the bedroom door closed with his back leg and rejoins me on the bed, resting his head exactly where it was before.

A shiver runs through me as I let myself relax once again. “Thank you,” I say softly, pulling the covers all the way to my chin.

He grunts in response.

I try to will myself to sleep, but it’s not happening. I stare at the endless sky, the moon, the branches dancing in her light, but my mind is fully awake. Thinking not about tonight, or Drago, but, oddly…

Of Mari.

She’s gonna flip her shit when she finds out.

Probably best not to tell her until we’re all back, so she’s not tempted to book a flight here and try to kick some excommunicated beta ass. As much as I’d like to give her the opportunity, a healer needs to stay with the pack.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t imagine what she might do if she were here.

Mari would drag ‘em up by their balls. Force them to apologize, even if I begged her not to, and then she’d kick their asses.

Deltas aren’t as strong as betas, but when it comes to me, Mari could move a fucking mountain.

And I’d do the same for her. Or try to, at least.

I imagine what she’d say if she were here, if she knew.

If you blame yourself for this, you deserve an ass kicking too. You did not ask for it. You didn’t deserve it, and it certainly isn’t your fault.

They chose to act like beasts.

They chose to separate you from the pack.

And so they chose to get squished by your new boy toy.

My headcanon version of Mari was right, even if that last bit reminded me of what real Mari had to say about certain things before I left.

“You need to have a conversation with him. Everyone has baggage, Willa.”

And while I wouldn’t call being the Alpha Killer baggage…

I did at least owe him a conversation.

Too bad he’s wolfed-out.

Except maybe that’s exactly what I need.

I scootch up in bed, sliding my legs out from under Drago’s head and resting my back against the upholstered headboard. “I’ve always trusted the mate bond,” I begin.
