The scary one, the witch, and the joker

The three ofus find Claudia in the great room, in the closest seating area to the stairs, sitting in one of the overstuffed warm beige armchairs and looking completely out of place in her corporate goth attire.

Black pencil skirt, deadly black stilettos, and a black lace top complement her fair complexion and severe bob. The overall look gives off a very distinct, “don’t fuck with me” vibe.

That is until she talks.

“I’m so sorry I haven’t been back to see you since the other night.” Her words gush out, eyes wide with excitement.

“Oh, well, we were pretty busy, so don’t—”

She can’t contain herself. She can’t even let me finish. “Right, well, I’ve been very busy since your last appearance, Mr—Uh… I’m sorry. I didn’t catch your last name.”

She stares straight into Drago’s eyes but can only hold direct contact for a few moments before she’s compelled to look away.

Drago tugs on his toga. “My name is simply Drago. Family names are of no consequence while I hold this power.”

“Ah, yes. Well, Drago, I watched you carefully last night, and I’ve concluded that you have magic from multiple sources.”

The woman looks so pleased with herself. I don’t have the heart to tell her we already know.

Luckily, Jonah just kind ofJonah’sthe situation. “Yes. It’s very interesting. He holds the magic of several alpha wolves within him. The more juice, the better he can defeat the entity that hunts our kind.”

Claudia nods, unaffected that her news wasn’t exactly news. I’d like to think it’s because Jonah is so good at being charming and diplomatic, but it’s more likely she’s simply caught up in her own excitement and doesn’t have room for much else.

“But that’s just it. From what I’ve gathered, our humanoid bodies are only meant to contain one stream of magic. Anything more and things get really weird, like with you, Willa.”

Weird was an understatement, but I let it slide.

“I don’t know what you’re protecting your people from, but I know this for certain. When the time comes, there’s no way you can fail. Not with all the magic you can house.”

Well, that’s good to know, I suppose. But again, we kinda already knew that.

“I saw you struggle to contain one stream of magic in particular.”

Drago eyes her, his arm around me tightening.

“That one is your greatest weakness and your greatest strength. Use it wisely.”

There. Now she’s finally said something useful. “What does that mean, exactly?” I ask.

“He’ll know when the time comes.”

I try not to show my annoyance, but cryptic shit isn’t my thing.

“Well, if you’ll excuse me, I must return to my research. Exciting times are ahead and I must be ready for all that entails.”

“Wait, you can’t just leave without offering at least a little context.” Like just a crumb, a scrap of context would do.

But Claudia doesn’t elaborate. Instead, she stands, click-clacks across the marble great room, and exits the compound without another word.

I shake my head. “What the fuck was that?” I mumble to myself.

“Witches are quirky ones, that’s for sure,” Jonah says and gives my knee a squeeze.

I lean into his warmth, and before I think better of it, I have to make sure. “We’re OK, right?”

He backs away to look into my eyes. “Of course. Why wouldn’t we be?”
