Too late I realize I shouldn’t have said his name. Anger flashes in his eyes and I back away slowly until I’m backed into the fountain. He stalks me like the animal he is. Dangerous and deranged.

“I tried to get you to notice me when I was working for your father but you never did.”

I whimper and slide my feet to the side, looking for a little more distance between us.

“You never said anything, Brad. Maybe you should have given me a chance and told me what was going on.”

“You still don’t know what’s going on!” he roars and I flinch, terror making my blood chill.

“No, I don’t. Why don’t you explain it to me.”

He grins but it’s like a wolf’s smirk. “It’s too late for that now. I saw you with that other man. I saw you giving yourself to him. You’re tainted by him now. But I still love you. So I’m going to make you whole again.”

With that he lunges at me, his hand high and I see the metallic glint of the knife in the moonlight.

I scream and throw myself to the side, falling into the dirty water of the fountain. I close my mouth, flailing around, trying to get my feet under me.

But he grasps the back of my neck in his hard hands and then holds me under. I struggle and strain, my hands knocking at his. He doesn’t let up though and I can feel the need to breathe growing until I know I have to breathe. I need air. My chest burns with the urge.

And just like that, the pressure holding me down is gone and I gasp, my hands grasping the side of the fountain. Sucking in air, I don’t notice at first that Vic is there, my eyes blurry with the dirty water and my lungs straining to suck in as much air as I can.

Until I hear a shriek and open my eyes to see Vic drive the knife into Brad’s chest over and over again, his dark eyes wild and angry.

Finally, Brad drops to the ground and Vic stalks over to me, lifting me in his arms. I shiver when I see the red glint on his hands and then I feel blackness tugging at me and I sink under, my hands clenched around his shirt in a death grip.

CHAPTER8

Victor

Icarry her across the street, my heart thudding in my chest. I almost lost her. I was seconds from that piece of shit taking her from me and maybe never finding out what happened to her.

I struggle to pull the rage that fueled me back under control. My hands are shaking and my eyes are blurred.

It takes me a minute to realize it’s tears. I almost fucking lost her. And as soon as she wakes up, I might paddle her ass. What the hell was she doing out all alone at night like she was dangling a big juicy burger in front of someone who hadn’t eaten in a week?

I called for back-up and Henry’s car screeches to a stop in the driveway. He jumps out, his mouth falling open. “Is she alright?”

“Yeah. It was fucking close though. There’s a body over there.” I nod my head to the park.

He grunts. “Left me with the damn clean-up again huh? I’m starting to feel like a maid, man. I want my shot at making a mess.”

I grunt. “I’m sure you’ll get your shot and then I’ll clean up for you. Just make sure you keep that piece of shit out of my sight. I don’t think I can kill him twice but I’d like to give it a shot.”

He nods his head and smirks. “So…is this your girl?”

My head whips around and I stare at him.

“Gimme a break, man. It’s on your face right now. You love her.”

“Yeah, I do. So I’ve got some stuff to take care of.”

He snaps me a salute and grins. “Got it! I’ll just get out of your hair.”

I slip into the house and into the living room, laying her down on the couch. Her clothes and body are soaked and I run upstairs to get some towels to dry her off.

By the time I get downstairs she’s stirring. I lean over her, my hands chafing hers lightly until she opens her eyes.

“There’s my pretty girl.”
