“I’ve never felt anything so intense before and it frightens me to see how dependent I’ve grown on your company. When I’m not seeing you, I feel as if I’m about to go mad.”

Belle giggled, though the smile slipped off her face a second later. “You took the words right out my mouth.”

Stephen leaned in, his brows lifting in question. “Does that mean what I think it does?”

“That I love you too? Most definitely. I think my heart fell for you the night you stayed by my side during my fever.”

“And you wait until now to tell me? How cruel, Hannah.”

She laughed. Now, it took no effort to reach out and take his hand. It felt natural. It felt right. It was easy. “I’m sorry. I should have told you earlier. Do you forgive me?”

“Only if I hear you say it one more time.”

Belle was happy to indulge. “I love you, Stephen.”

“I love you too, Hannah.”

She tried to keep her smile in place at the sound of her fake name. She wished she could tell him the truth. She wished she could let him know who she was so she could hear him call her real name in his declaration of love. But now, Belle was more afraid than guilty.

If I tell him who I am now, how will he react?
