“However,” Thomas continued, unable to keep the desperation from seeping into his words. “As her sister, you know Lady Evelina with a far greater depth than I do. Is it wrong to say that she is the sort of person who ought to have all the information and options at hand, before making a decision of such magnitude?”

Lady Diana shook her head. “Your Grace, Iamsorry, but I fear the decision has already been made.”

“By whom?” Thomas pressed. “Lady Evelina? Or someone else?”

Lady Diana went quiet.

Thomas tried not to get his hopes up. He had no idea whether what he was saying was convincing, or worthy, or not. All he knew was that he meant every word of it, and he would not leave without giving it his very best effort. Perhaps not even then.

“If you love your Sister as I know she loves you,” Thomas continued, daring to take a step forward, his voice soft. “You will let her make this choice for herself, regardless of the risks. She is an intelligent woman; she will not make a choice with consequences she is unwilling to commit to.”

Lady Diana lifted her eyes from the floor to meet his eyes. There was still at least five feet of space between them, and the loud whispers of their conversation seemed to have seeped into the ether of the otherwise empty room. Even so, Thomas was certain Lady Diana had to hear the pounding of his heart, the sound reverberating both within his chest and beyond.

Lady Diana sighed, and turned her eyes to the ground.
