Lord Brexley snarled. He knew he had been cornered.

“Your time is over,” Emma said. “People will know what you’ve done. Your good name is ruined.”

“No,” he said. He looked around the room. There was a wild look in his eyes. He grabbed Leda who was standing nearest to him and pulled out a short dagger from his pocket, holding it at her neck.

“Leda!” Ariadne screamed and tried to take a step toward her but Jack held her back.

“You never know when you might need it,” Brexley said with a maniacal glint in his eyes. He pushed the knife further into her skin causing Leda to whimper.

Dread coiled up in her chest. “Let her go, I’m begging you.”

“Put it down,” Edward said as if trying to pace a wild animal.

“You will let me go,” he said, “or I will cut her pretty little neck right here.”

“No,” Ariadne said, desperation seeping into her voice. She couldn’t see her sister get hurt. She turned to Edward and Jack who looked like they were looking for a way to capture him. But it would be too dangerous for Leda. “Let him go,” she said.

Edward turned to her briefly. “What?”

“We know he’s capable of anything. He will hurt my sister if we don’t let him go.”

“We can’t let him get away,” Edward said. “We might not catch up to him.”

“We have to take this chance. Edward, please,” Ariadne begged. Edward gave her a reluctant nod before he and Jack both backed away from the door so that Brexley could pass through. He flashed them a sly smile before dragging Leda out of the small room with him. Ariadne could see that without his cane he was having some difficulty walking. If only she could—

Before he could take Leda out of the flat, Charles appeared at the entrance. Out of surprise, Brexley’s grip on her tightened. Ariadne saw the exact moment that had happened. She barreled toward him despite the shot of pain in her legs and hooked her leg under his. He went sprawling to the ground, the knife sliding out of his grip.

Before he could get up, Charles quickly bound his hands behind him. “What on Earth is happening?”

“I will explain everything to you,” Edward said. “But keep him right there.” Brexley was struggling against Charles but his grip on him was tighter. Edward returned from the kitchen, carrying a long knotted piece of rope which he promptly tied around his hand. When he was done, he hauled the other man up.

Charles looked between Edward and Brexley. “Edward will you explain—”

Before he could finish, Lord Brexley cut him off. “He’s trying to ruin my name. Help me and I’ll secure you the seat at the Parliament.”

Charles ignored him. “Care to tell me what’s going on?”

“Brexley is our culprit,” Edward said with a small grimace. “We caught the wrong person before.” He turned to face Ariadne and took her hand in his. All was well again.
