“Why would he do that?” Carmen asked. They lived in a place that could be hardly perused by a rich lord.

“Who knows and who cares. He has bought this place and the deed now belongs to him,” the constable said. “I brought your landlord around just so that you can confirm with him on your own.”

“Is it true?” Carmen asked although knowing what his answer would be.

“Yes,” he said without meeting her gaze. He had absolutely no backbone to speak of.

“Guess he doesn’t want his property belonging to the whores after all,” the constable sneered. At his words, there was a murmur of shouts and angry whispers. Carmen balled her fists at her side. She already knew what these men thought of them and no matter what they did, they would never be able to outrun their past in front of their eyes. And nothing she said would change their mind. Her silence wasn’t compliance, it was her self-respect. She didn’t have anything to explain about herself to them.

The constable nodded to the third man. “This is his lawyer, and he shall be dealing with the legal matters of the things.”

That was the lawyer’s cue to speak. “If you’re not out of here before the next week, drastic steps will be taken against you.”

“I’ll be keeping a lookout for you,” the constable said, looking straight at Carmen. “Everybody knows what you do around here.”

Carmen met his gaze head-on. “And what do they say about us?”

The constable spat at her feet. “That you’re a nuisance and vermin waiting to be taken out. Well, I’ve finally done it.” A few of the women took menacing step toward them at his words, but Carmen stopped them with a raised hand. She didn’t want the situation to get ugly.

The constable looked almost afraid as he motioned to the other two men to follow him and then hurried away. Following their departure some of the women broke into tears.

“Are we really going to lose our home then?” Elaine asked in dismay.

“What are we going to do now?” Lily asked, panic clearly visible in her eyes. The other women looked no different, but even in their fear and uncertainty, they turned to her.

Carmen thought for a moment, looking at the looming and almost crooked building that had welcomed them in open arms. They wouldn’t give it up so easily, and not for a rich man’s whim. “I’m going to find out everything about this Duke of Davenport and then I’m going to have a little chat with him.”
